Good Luck in 2016 Upper.....Go the Red and Blue!
Norman Raymond Griffiths 1917-2016 RIP
Upper Gully last week lost its last remaining link to the formation of the footy club with Norm Griffiths passing away at the age of 98. Norm attended the very first meeting of the Upper Ferntree Gully Football on the 14th October 1948 at Allens Tea Rooms, when he was elected as a committee member. Subsequently, Norm was named as Upper Gully Football Club’s inaugural Captain and Coach in 1949 before handing the reigns over to Alec Cody early in the season. After retiring at the end of the 1953 season having played around 70 games, Norm became President for the 1954 season, which saw a lifelong friendship made with our first Premiership coach in Frank Lowrie who also started as coach during 1954. Norm continued as President until 1956 even making a comeback to the footy field during that season, finishing his playing career at Upper Gully with around 85 games. For Norm’s contribution to the establishment of the Club he received a Life Membership at the Club Ball in 1952. Norm’s brothers, Roy, Bill and Lawrie also played for Upper Gully during the early fifties, while Norm would go on to make many friendship’s contributing and supporting Upper Gully over the following 60 years, including attending most reunions over the past decade.
A Service celebrating the life of Norman Raymond Griffiths will be held at Le Pine Chapel, 1096 Burwood Hwy, Ferntree Gully on WEDNESDAY (Apr. 13, 2016) commencing at 2.30 p. m. Private Cremation
Sponsor of the Week – Norm Reynolds Motors
Hi, my name is Norm Reynolds, owner proprietor of Norm Reynolds Motors (formerly Geoff Whiter Motors) – having commenced my career as an apprentice motor mechanic with Geoff Whiter in July 1969. In 1974 we moved to Upper Ferntree Gully, in its present location, as a used car trader and we are now the oldest established Motor Trading business in Ferntree Gully. On Geoff’s retirement in 1990, I took over the business and have endeavoured to provide the same good quality service to our customers. Our success is based on the fact that over the years we have never allowed our standards to drop and continue to provide good quality used cars to our customers at competitive prices and excellent after sales service. To celebrate over 30 years in Ferntree Gully we are offering you all the benefits and security that is normally associated with purchasing from a franchise dealer without the high pressure sales methods and excessive prices with a full 1yr/20,000km warranty on our vehicles. For your convenience, all our vehicles are RACV tested at no extra cost.
The service department, headed by senior mechanic Peter Ashman, offers good quality workmanship and guarantees all its work. As well as specialising in all major and minor repairs, Norm Reynolds Service Centre can assist in all EFI Diagnostic and repairs including auto transmissions. We are also a licensed vehicle tester and can cater for all your needs and requirements. For your convenience, the business and service centre is located within walking distance to the Upper Ferntree Gully railway station. Also a courtesy car is provided if necessary. We have an early bird drop off service.

This year we are rolling out our buddy system between our Under 17's and senior players, this program has been established to continue to improve the transition from junior to senior footy at Upper Ferntree Gully. The program will consist of our senior players presenting their buddy with their jumper for the season at a jumper presentation night held this Friday following that the seniors will be attending at least 2 of the boys games throughout the year and also our senior buddies will be present for one of the junior family nights. outside of this the buddies can communicate with each other as mentors and provide advice for the boys to aid in their development on and off the field. With plenty of new faces and a full side the Vets thanks to Jason Zinnow’s efforts were able to field a team for the first round on Sunday against South Belgrave, who had some ex Upper Gully players in their side with Michael Scoon, Wayne Diegan and Richie Fahie. With a fine day and good crowd in attendance, what a game it was with most of the scoring being done at the Willow Road end of the ground, Upper held a three goal lead at three quarter time only for South Belgrave to come back and hit the front with a minute or so to go. But the never say die attitude of the Upper Gully players saw a mad scramble of hands in the goal square and with the ball falling into Jimmy Weir hands he duly slotted through the winning goal to see Upper win by 4 points. Great performances all over the field with Josh Maroney, giving plenty of run when not having to contend with Scoony and Shannon Graham, who looked like he could slot straight back into the ones side, controlling the back half with support from Chris Smith, Tom Caruso, Saidi Kipyego and Tim Weir. Jason Zinnow rucked all day with Casey Degroot, Mat Lizza , Brad Smith, Mick Clancy, Andy Lee and Steven Sturt getting plenty of the ball through the middle of the ground and giving the forwards plenty of shots on goal. Bull Rattray was everywhere, even his shorts at one stage, finishing with 5 goals, while match winner Jimmy Weir with 2, Justin Wise with 2 great snaps and Pud with 1 also were lively and had great support from Leigh Thomas and Brad Weinert. Thanks to Jason for organising the Vets with plenty of phone calls, Dale for Goal Umpiring, Ben for boundary, even though the ball never went out on his side of the ground and thanks also to Greg Blundell, out with a knee injury for coaching and Craig Bennett for being runner, hopefully we get them both back playing this year. Next game is on the Anzac Day weekend against Bayswater.
Anyone interested in playing footy every second Sunday; then the Vets team is for you. So if anyone is interested please contact Jason Zinnow on 0411 079 829 or otherwise turn up to training on Thursday nights from 6:30pm.
