It was a big week for the club last week with the Toyota Good for Footy night on Thursday with Jake Stringer and Nathan Jones appearing; great effort for Jake Stringer to hang around and dish out the fines before the senior selections. Thanks to Toyota and everyone who made the night a success, it was a great sight seeing so many players of all age groups training on Kings Park. The seniors had another good win last week against Scoresby, to continue our best start to a season since 1991 when we started with nine wins, with Luke Leslie playing his first senior game kicking a goal and one of the veterans in Tate Hickleton kicking 5. The U19’s and reserves were no match for Scoresby with both losing comfortably, welcome to Liam May and Corey Daniel playing their first games at the club, also good to Carmine Porcaro kick 3 goals in his first game in 12 months after recovering from a knee injury. Good to see many old faces at the Past Players day last Saturday; thanks to everyone who showed up on the day and especially Casey DeGroot for helping to organise, lets continue to grow this group so the club can continue to benefit from the support of past players. The Div. 4 Netball side had a bye last week while the Div. 5 side won, this Friday they both play at Chirnside Park at 8:20pm; good luck girls. Also good to see Jason Wood making an appearance at Kings Park on Saturday; Jason is the Federal Member for Latrobe and a great supporter for the club. Saturday we welcome Warrandyte to Kings Park for the first time since 2010 in what will be the 62nd time we have played each other since 1950, only Ferntree Gully have we played more times in our history. Highlight from the juniors was the U12 girls beating the top side last week. Please find attached the latest Junior Newsletter with all the latest happening so far this season, this week the U10, U11, U13 and U17D’s are at Dobson Park and the U15’s at Kings Park with the others playing away as well as the U12 girls who are away against Emerald starting at 11:30am; get down to the juniors Sunday and show your support. Josh Begley kicked 2 goals in Eastern Ranges win over Gippsland and was also joined in the side by Corey Wakefield last Saturday, giving Upper Gully two representatives at Eastern Ranges. Tim Smith also continued his great form this season being named in the best for Casey Scorpions after kicking 3 goals against Sandringham last weekend. The Vets this week head to Forest Hill hoping to get back on the winners list with the return of Bull and Mick Clancy, the game is starting later at 3:15pm to accommodate an U15’s game beforehand. Don’t forget that Club Memberships are available as well as Player Sponsor opportunities which includes Club Membership. Good Luck in 2016 Upper.....Go the Red and Blue!
“Season So Far” – By Andy Hayman (Football Manager)
Seniors have started the season very well winning the first 6 games against varied opposition. We have definitely improved this season and combined with specific needs recruiting, updated game plan and individual coaching we are playing a good brand of running football which so far sides have struggled to cope with and in particular score against. No-one player has been a stand out and this is another reason we have started well, as we are sharing the load each week. We have a tough stretch of 5 or 6 games to come now and with the weather starting to turn this will be our test against strong bodies in particular against Templestowe in Round 8 and The Basin in Round 9.
Reserves and Under 19’s have followed a similar path to each other, not really playing a good 4 quarter game, more so very good quarters here and there and having both won 4 out of 6 games the improvement to come from both teams is enormous. Training regularly and getting to know new players etc. is still an issue and is definitely holding these teams back a bit so hopefully with improved attendance and better knowledge of structures and set plays the improvement will come and both teams can push for a top 3 finish which is critical to success in 3rd division.

The Modern Game
Upper Gully Football Club has yet again employed the services of Craig Winter from ‘The Modern Game’. 2016 will be the 7th year that Craig or as he is commonly known as Crackers will be involved with this club. We would be one of the very few football clubs that would have this level of commitment to supporting the coaches. ‘The Modern Game’ provides a Coaches Development program to support junior coaches and the players in their football journey. ‘The Modern Game’ philosophy and mission is to educate coaches, via their robust coaching framework, that junior football is not all about scoreboard results, it is about teaching, developing and improving the children with their sporting skills and their general life skills. If the focus is on these areas, the ‘results’ elements will look after themselves. Craig will again hold Coaching workshops which our coaches will attend, every coach will be provided coaching resources to assist in areas such as planning training sessions and other relevant tools, he will also be available to assist in training sessions. He will also observe our coaches on game day and provide verbal and written feedback on areas that were well handled and areas where they can in improve in their coaching performance. We would be one of the only EFL clubs that would go that level in assisting and improving our Junior Coaches.
The Modern Game is again looking forward to supporting the club, and specifically the coaches, to further develop their skill and knowledge and enhance their coaching journey. After consultation with all parties, we agree that the current format of the program provides the outcomes the club is looking for and hence we will continue to provide the following: Structure and support to facilitate coaching interviews, 4 x Pre-season coaching workshops, Age Specific Coaching Folders provided to each Coach, 1:1 Mentoring/Tuition for individual coaches, Regular visits and practical support at training sessions, Game Day observations & feedback, Additional support with club requirements (ie. Policies, etc.)
Once again the focus of the program and partnership will be to ensure external and ongoing support is provided to each coach as often as needed. While many of the coaches are at different stages of their journey, past years’ suggest they all benefit from: Tips to prepare & improve your training session, Young player development, Age specific training programs, Player Assessments to track improvement, Skill acquisition and remediation advice, Skills to coach resilience & manage expectation.
