Should be a great contest on Saturday when we meet Templestowe with both sides undefeated and playing great footy early in the season, a good chance for the seniors to get an idea where they are at. Last week all three sides had convincing wins against Warrandyte and with $1000 on offer from sponsor Phoenix Lubricants to the winner of the senior game it was a very good result for the club who are currently leading the Club Championship for division 3. Tate Hickleton continued his good form kicking 6 goals in the seniors, while Luke Strachan had a day out kicking 12 goals in the reserves. Also getting in on the goal feast were Carmine Porcaro with 6 and Jake Cawsey with 5 in the U19’s. Congratulations to Jayden Cutts on his 50th game for the club in the reserves game alongside Tate DeGroot, Chris Moorhouse, Nick Heuston and Zac Klibingaitis all playing their first games of the season. The girls netball sides had a win and a loss last week with the Division 4 side sitting fifth on the ladder and the division 5 side third after four rounds.Tim Smith has continued his great form this season being again named in the best players after kicking 3 goals against Box Hill last week, as well he has been included in the 25 man squad for the VFL game against the SANFL this Sunday the 29th May at Adelaide Oval. The U12 girls had another win last week as the juniors come to the half-way point of the year this week; this week the U9, U12, U14 and U17A are at Dobson Park along with the U12 girls while all other sides are away; get down to the juniors Sunday and show your support. Well done and good luck to Rory Bailey and Hunter Greenall who have made the U15 EFL Interleague team that will play in the Metro Championships starting under lights on June 1st and then play another couple of games over the June long weekend. Good to see Tom Meagher play well for the EFL U19’s last week in their two point win against Geelong. The Vets returned to the winning list against Forest Hill in a hard fought win, well done to our hard working secretary Tom who kicked his first goal for the club. Next game is sure to be huge against Boronia on the 5th June. Don’t forget that Club Memberships are available as well as Player Sponsor opportunities which includes Club Membership. Upper Gully Vets – Round Four vs Forest Hill
The Vets returned to the winning list with a close and hard fought game against Forest Hill last Sunday. Although losing a couple of players in Casey, Saadi and Sturter we had Bull and Mick Clancy back and the appearance of Heath Wilson for his first game of the year we still managed to have a couple on the bench for the start of the game. A late starting time for the game due to another match on the ground, a slow start saw us down by a point at quarter time but with a dominate second quarter we went into half time full of confidence with a six point lead which we extended to ten points at the final break. A couple of highlights included Jimmy Weir running down Sanka’s brother which resulted in a free kick and goal and our hard working secretary Tom kicking his first goal for the club. Forest Hill started the last quarter with a couple of goals to draw level half way through the quarter. With Winger and Amir of injured and no bench we had to dig deep and through the efforts of the midfield pushing the ball forward we were able to score a couple of goals and go on to win by 13 points. With Jase dominating the ruck the midfield were too strong for Forest Hill around the footy with Clancy, Andy and Brad S all getting plenty of contested footy and Lizza, Shagga, Jimmy C and Heath providing plenty of run and carry. Good to see new player Simon get some nice touches in the forward line as well as Jeff providing options. Down back Craig took a couple of nice telling marks and Josh as usual battled hard on Forest Hill’s key forwards. Next Game vs Boronia at Tormore Reserve 5th June.

The Modern Game
Upper Gully Football Club has yet again employed the services of Craig Winter from ‘The Modern Game’. 2016 will be the 7th year that Craig or as he is commonly known as Crackers will be involved with this club. We would be one of the very few football clubs that would have this level of commitment to supporting the coaches. ‘The Modern Game’ provides a Coaches Development program to support junior coaches and the players in their football journey. ‘The Modern Game’ philosophy and mission is to educate coaches, via their robust coaching framework, that junior football is not all about scoreboard results, it is about teaching, developing and improving the children with their sporting skills and their general life skills. If the focus is on these areas, the ‘results’ elements will look after themselves. Craig will again hold Coaching workshops which our coaches will attend, every coach will be provided coaching resources to assist in areas such as planning training sessions and other relevant tools, he will also be available to assist in training sessions. He will also observe our coaches on game day and provide verbal and written feedback on areas that were well handled and areas where they can in improve in their coaching performance. We would be one of the only EFL clubs that would go that level in assisting and improving our Junior Coaches.
The Modern Game is again looking forward to supporting the club, and specifically the coaches, to further develop their skill and knowledge and enhance their coaching journey. After consultation with all parties, we agree that the current format of the program provides the outcomes the club is looking for and hence we will continue to provide the following: Structure and support to facilitate coaching interviews, 4 x Pre-season coaching workshops, Age Specific Coaching Folders provided to each Coach, 1:1 Mentoring/Tuition for individual coaches, Regular visits and practical support at training sessions, Game Day observations & feedback, Additional support with club requirements (ie. Policies, etc.)
Once again the focus of the program and partnership will be to ensure external and ongoing support is provided to each coach as often as needed. While many of the coaches are at different stages of their journey, past years’ suggest they all benefit from: Tips to prepare & improve your training session, Young player development, Age specific training programs, Player Assessments to track improvement, Skill acquisition and remediation advice, Skills to coach resilience & manage expectation.
