Last week certainly lived up to the hype of the top two sides going head to head with Upper staying undefeated winning by a point to show the rest of the competition that we are serious contenders this season. Welcome to Jarrad Smith who played his first game for the club in the seniors last week with Port Melbourne having a bye. The reserves also had a good win against the top side with a number of U19’s fitting into the side well, due to Templestowe forfeiting their game, including Adrian Catalano, Jake Saltum and Luke Meagher all playing their first open age games. Well done to Tom Heuston at last week’s 5K draw on picking up the major prize.Although the U19’s would rather have him in their side it is good to see Matt DeJong try and further his cricket career in England playing with Paignton Cricket Club in Devon. Please read the EFL policy on Glass at EFL venues below, the Club will issue a first and final warning to players, members and supporters that Glass (stubbies) at the ground is prohibited outside the licensed social rooms. It is a rule under the EFL By Laws and the club is punishable so will be enforcing the rule. Also the club wishes to reinforce its policies on Anti Social behaviour that will not be tolerated against Umpires, Players and Opposition which can be viewed on the club website by clicking on the following linkCLUB POLICIES. Saturday we are at home against The Basin who will be looking to knock us off to so we need to continue the way we have been playing. The girls netball sides both had wins last week with the Division 4 side now sitting third on the ladder and the division 5 side on top. It was a good weekend for our higher level boys with Tim Smith playing for the VFL against SANFL while at Eastern Ranges Corey Wakefield kicked 5 goals and was named in the best players with 22 disposals and Josh Begley playing as a midfielder was named best with 19 disposals and 5 clearances in their narrow loss to North Ballarat. Well done to Byron McDonald from the U13’s who has made the EFL U13 Development Side which will play 2 games on Sunday the 12th June at Centenary Park, East Bentleigh. Also great to see Rory Bailey get the Best on Ground Medal tonight in the U15 Interleague game which the EFL won by 20 points against South Metro at East Bentleigh. The juniors are now into the second half of the season with the U15’s currently undefeated on top of the ladder, while the U17D side is sitting 5th, U13’s 4th and U11’s and U12’s both 2nd heading towards finals, also the U12 girls had another win last week and find themselves 3rd on the ladder; this week the U17A’s are at Kings Park and the U10, U12, U14 and U17D are at Dobson Park while all other sides are away; get down to the juniors Sunday and show your support. The Vets are in for another huge game when they take on Boronia this Sunday at Tormore Reserve starting at 2:30pm with Bull and Mick Clancy lining up against their old side. Don’t forget that Club Memberships are available as well as Player Sponsor opportunities which includes Club Membership. Neil Thompson is again running the King Club; refer below for further details and get on board this important coterie group of Upper Gully. Andy Neville is again in charge of the VIP area for this season; contact him on 0418 546 260 if you have a group that would like to watch the game from behind glass with Upper Gully Hospitality thrown in. Don’t forget to support our sponsors and especially our major sponsor Ferntree Gully Toyota; contact club vice-president Dean Wilson on 0412 312 672 to help get you a great deal on your next Toyota purchase. The Modern Game
Upper Gully Football Club has yet again employed the services of Craig Winter from ‘The Modern Game’. 2016 will be the 7th year that Craig or as he is commonly known as Crackers will be involved with this club. We would be one of the very few football clubs that would have this level of commitment to supporting the coaches. ‘The Modern Game’ provides a Coaches Development program to support junior coaches and the players in their football journey. ‘The Modern Game’ philosophy and mission is to educate coaches, via their robust coaching framework, that junior football is not all about scoreboard results, it is about teaching, developing and improving the children with their sporting skills and their general life skills. If the focus is on these areas, the ‘results’ elements will look after themselves. Craig will again hold Coaching workshops which our coaches will attend, every coach will be provided coaching resources to assist in areas such as planning training sessions and other relevant tools, he will also be available to assist in training sessions. He will also observe our coaches on game day and provide verbal and written feedback on areas that were well handled and areas where they can in improve in their coaching performance. We would be one of the only EFL clubs that would go that level in assisting and improving our Junior Coaches.
The Modern Game is again looking forward to supporting the club, and specifically the coaches, to further develop their skill and knowledge and enhance their coaching journey. After consultation with all parties, we agree that the current format of the program provides the outcomes the club is looking for and hence we will continue to provide the following: Structure and support to facilitate coaching interviews, 4 x Pre-season coaching workshops, Age Specific Coaching Folders provided to each Coach, 1:1 Mentoring/Tuition for individual coaches, Regular visits and practical support at training sessions, Game Day observations & feedback, Additional support with club requirements (ie. Policies, etc.)
Once again the focus of the program and partnership will be to ensure external and ongoing support is provided to each coach as often as needed. While many of the coaches are at different stages of their journey, past years’ suggest they all benefit from: Tips to prepare & improve your training session, Young player development, Age specific training programs, Player Assessments to track improvement, Skill acquisition and remediation advice, Skills to coach resilience & manage expectation.
