Sandgate masters were at home against Moorooka last Sunday. Past players were well aware of our opposition’s height and ability and expected a tough contest.
With Captain Nails playing against his old team, he won the toss and rightfully kicked with the heavy wind to the dressing rooms. Moorookas middle group were slick, and with their tall ruckman Capper continually winning the ruck, were quick to move the ball forward. Our backline lead by Carts and Sock were excellent, and Jammo was revelling in the fullback position. Sandgate kicked a behind and a goal to Darren Ridge and went to the first break only 7 points behind.
Sandgate failed to score in the second quarter, but Moorooka failed to capitalise on the wind and inaccurate kicking only produced one goal and several behinds. Once again our backline was strong, but our forwards were out positioned by Moorooka. We suffered injuries to Willow, Fergy and Joel in the first half, and both were missed for the remainder of the game.
Moorooka outplayed us in the third quarter kicking three goals to our solitary one from Nudie. The last quarter Sandgate held Moorooka scoreless with determined efforts from Joey, Banksy Dale and Timmsy. Our forwards could not capitalise on the wind and only two behinds were kicked.
Overall it was an average game from Sandgate as a team, but it did have excellent individual efforts.
Final score
Sandgate 2-4-16 lost to Moorooka 6-8-44
Top effort award- Banksy
