Getting Technical

We hope everyone had a great time last weekend. Whether it was your first VCL game or you played last year and you’re back for more, hopefully Sunday was bucket loads of fun!

The first round of the VCL saw some wonderful play with some Zones earning super high technical points! Teams were spotted with great width of attack, an aspect of the National Curriculum that was lacking in many VCL teams last year. There was also plenty of great play built up from the back and a possession style of play was evident in a number of teams.

The reason we promote teams complying with these areas is evident if you check out FIFA assessment of Aussie players and teams when compared with the best football countries in the world – Spain, Germany and Holland! To compete with these countries, our Youth Players need training and practice in this style of play NOW, to develop a sound understanding and good habits for later on when they’ll be playing at the highest level. Imagine how great the Socceroos and Matildas will be in the future when all of our top young VCL players come through displaying these skills with great confidence and competence, joining other talented young Australians who have learned and played to the National Curriculum in their respective States. It’s exciting to think of Australia mixing it with the big guys in World Football!

Unfortunately, a few Zones were disappointing on the weekend, scoring very low technical points. We’ll help those Zones out and provide Head Coaches with some feedback to ensure they improve… in the meantime, remember that it’s about attempting to implement the National Curriculum, and so it was sad to see some Zones score very low points because they didn’t try at all. Our best case in point – the teams we watched that simply bombed the ball out from a goal kick, with no attempts at all to build up play from the back lost the chance to score 4 points! It’s not much help for players in those teams trying to develop and learn the National Curriculum, either… it lets them down… so coaches, don’t forget to stick to the curriculum and the technical points criteria, and players… help out your team mates and your coaches and give it a go!

Of course, it’s only week one and we know everyone is still learning… and so we’re sure we’ll see a few improvements this coming weekend.

Referee Points

It was a pleasure for FFV staff to visit Zones and watch teams play with so much respect for each other and the referees! And the parents, coaches and team officials were equally as lovely as they encouraged kids to play, with words of support rather than any abuse – meaning top points were scored for a number of teams. We hope that everyone will keep it up… it certainly made for some great football.

Keep up the great work everyone – we are really hoping that our referees NEVER have to deduct any points from teams!

It’s Just a Rumour!

Have you heard from your team mate’s mum’s sister’s husband’s work friend that there might be a change of venue to this week’s fixture? And what about that comment that your dad heard from that bloke who knows a coach’s great aunty whose sister’s neighbour said that the state team was picked before the VCL even started? Did you hear that story from my cousin’s best friend’s old uncle Bob, who knows a guy who coached in the VCL a few years ago, whose son is playing in another Zone?

It’s important that everyone is reminded that the ‘rumour mill’ in football is extremely active and all involved with the VCL should be aware that unless something is reported directly by FFV, it is highly unlikely to be true! It has been extremely disappointing for coaches, administrators and FFV staff to hear some of the ridiculous and in some cases malicious rumours circulating in some Zones.

We all know how ‘the grapevine’ works and how distorted things can get when passed from person to person!

For the sake of the players, please focus your energy on supporting your team and the team’s staff as well as your Zone in its entirety, rather than engaging in damaging rumour and gossip.

If it’s important and it’s a fact, we’ll make sure you all know about it… that’s what our websites are for and of course what Champions Chat is all about!

Gala Weekends – Take your Game on the Road!

The VCL is Victoria’s leading state-wide junior sports league... we can’t think of any others that go the extra mile, literally, and include all the talent from right accross the state in the one comp! We’re proud to boast talented participants from every corner of Victoria and support regional communities by bringing match days to locations right around the state. The Gala Weekends provide a magnificent opportunity for young players to learn what it’s really like to be a rep team ‘on the road’ and each Gala Weekend is action packed with each team playing two matches over a weekend and over 750 participants at each Gala.

The HUGE benefits of Gala Weekends are:

• Event atmosphere – i.e large number of players spectators gives the gala round a real event feel and experience playing in front of large crowd.

• Loads of talent identification scouts present – i.e large number of players present makes it easy for our talent identification scouts to see more players at once and gives you a better chance to get noticed!

• Players development opportunities of travel - i.e. Gain experience in playing after travelling just like the state, National (Socceroos and Matildas) or club (Melbourne Victory) squads do.

• Experience playing in regional centres.

• Fairness of travel - i.e. Teams based in regional centres travel an average of four hours to play ALL of their away games and some of our regional players even travel four hours just to play at HOME!

• Playing two matches in the one weekend. – i.e Two matches makes the trip for worthwhile and gives you more football to enjoy.

All local councils are proving the FFV with tremendous support for these Gala Weekends. We encourage everyone to book via the Visitor Information Centre in each town to enable us to track visitor numbers and ensure future funding.

The first two gala rounds are:

Mildura
3 & 4 December 2011
Mildura - visit the Visitor Information Centre website:
http://www.visitmildura.com.au/

Shepparton
10 & 11 December 2011
Shepparton - visit the Visitor Information Centre website:
http://www.discovershepparton.com.au/pages/events-accommodation/

Further information about the next two up and coming gala rounds in the New Year will be released in the next episode of Champions Chat!

Good luck this weekend,

The team at Champions Chat
