VCL Round 10 Wrap

It was the final round of the VCL before the Christmas break and all teams were keen to put in a strong performance before the month long hiatus. It was also the first round of matches since the technical and respect points for the opening nine matches were added to competition tables.

A healthy influx of technical and respect points has seen South East Cougars move up to fifth place in the Under 13 Boys. The Cougars looked impressive in their 2-2 draw with Western Wolves while Loddon Mallee Lighting and North West Wanderers had entertaining 3-2 wins over Rivers FC and North East Diamonds respectively. In other matches Wimmera South Coast Eagles defeated Central City 3-0, table toppers Southern Bluetongues defeated Eastern FC 4-0 and a five goal first half blitz saw Northern All Stars defeat Gippsland Knights 6-0.

North East Diamonds are now the league leaders in the Under 13 Girls competition, edging clear of Southern Bluetongues. Both teams have ten wins and one loss, but North East received four more technical and respect points than their title rivals and are now clear on top of the table. And it was another strong showing for the team in black and white, with a 7-0 win over a talented North West Wanderers side. Southern kept in touch with North East with a solid 5-0 win over Eastern, while Loddon Mallee and Rivers put on an attractive contest, with Rivers winning 3-0 though Loddon played better than the score line suggests. Western Wolves edged past South East Cougars 2-1, Northern overcame Gippsland 4-0 and Wimmera South Coast recorded their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Central.

Things could hardly be closer in the Under 14 Boys at the conclusion of Round 10. Western Wolves, North East Diamonds and Northern All Stars are all locked on 43 points, while only six points separates first from seventh. North East suffered their first defeat of the season, upset by a fast finishing North West side 3-0. Western had an impressive 2-1 win over South East, who would have gone top if they could have overturned a 1-0 half time deficit. Rivers secured their second win of the season with an inspired 2-1 come from behind win over Loddon Mallee. Southern Bluetongues kept in touch with the leaders with a 5-1 win over Eastern, Northern overcame Gippsland 4-0 and Central defeated Wimmera 2-0.

South East Cougars have given themselves some breathing room at the summit of the Under 15 Girls competition after the release of technical and respect points, though a solid 1-0 win by Western over South East has closed the gap to six points, the result also ending South East’s ten match winning streak. Southern Bluetongues defeated Gippsland 6-1 while North East defeated North West 10-1 with seven second half goals for the Diamonds. Wimmera South Coast Eagles defeated Central City 2-0 in a close match, Northern All Stars and Gippsland played out a 1-1 draw and Loddon Mallee and Rivers drew 2-2.

North East are five points clear on top of the table in the Under 15 Boys thanks to their good technical and respect points score and their 3-1 win over North West which helped solidify their position, with second placed Western Wolves enjoying a 2-0 win over South East. Southern and Eastern may both consider themselves unlucky to have drawn 1-1, with both teams having chances to snatch a win. Wimmera fought hard in their 2-1 win over a determined Central City outfit and Loddon Mallee played well in their 2-0 win over Rivers.

Northern All Stars have climbed to fourth spot in the Under 17 Girls competition with healthy technical and respect points backed up by a 7-3 win over Gippsland. Western Wolves overcame South East 6-2 while North East put in another strong performance, defeating North West 10-2. The Diamonds were denied top stop however as Loddon Mallee overcame Rivers 5-0. Eastern and Southern Bluetongues contested a see-sawing affair, with Eastern emerging 4-2 victors and Central City defeated Wimmera South Coast 3-1.

Central City and Wimmera South Coast Eagles put on one of the best matches in the VCL so far in the Under 17 Boys this season, with both teams playing excellent and attractive football throughout. Central City won the match 3-2 though they are still trailing the Eagles by two points following the release of the technical and respect points. Western Wolves had a comfortable 7-0 win over South East, Southern and Eastern drew 2-2 and North West went down to North East with 4-1 the final score. Loddon Mallee looked excellent in their 4-1 win over Rivers, while Gippsland were on the winning side of the third 4-1 result of the round, defeating Northern.
