VCL Round 13 Wrap

With only four rounds to go, we’re definitely at the business end of the season. All teams will not only be focusing on securing the three competition points each week, but trying to earn maximum technical and respect points too.

Southern Bluetongues kept their unbeaten season alive in the Under 13 Boys, though they were pushed all the way by a very impressive North West Wanderers outfit, the match finishing 2-1. After Western Wolves and Rivers FC were locked at 1-1 going into the break, the Wolves were just able to edge ahead of their opponents, the match finishing 3-2. North East Diamonds kept a clean sheet this week, beating Eastern FC 2-0 while South East Cougars also had a two goal win, overcoming Central City 4-2. Northern All Stars and Loddon Mallee played out a 1-1 draw while Gippsland Knights had no answers for the Wimmera South Coast Eagles attack, with the Eagles recording a 7-0 victory.

Northern All Stars and Loddon Mallee both showed plenty of promise in the Under 13 Girls, with the Lightning eventually winning the match 2-0. Rivers FC defeated Western Wolves in an engaging 3-2 match at the Springside Recreation Reserve. Wimmera South Coast just had enough in the tank to get past Gippsland, winning 2-1 while Central City overcame a resilient South East by the same score line. North East Diamonds had a handy 5-0 win over Eastern at DISC while neither keeper could be beaten in the match between North West and Southern, 0-0 the final result.

Things are incredibly tight in the Under 14 Boys competition, with only two points separating first from fourth. The top four teams weren’t giving an inch over the weekend, all recording wins. Table toppers Western Wolves defeated Rivers 3-0, maintaining increasing their goal difference advantage over second placed Northern, who defeated Loddon Mallee 3-1. Third placed Central City fought hard in their 2-0 win over South East while North East Diamonds put in a solid performance to defeat Eastern 5-0. Wimmera South Coast Eagles defeated Gippsland 1-0 in a close encounter at Stead Park while Southern beat North West 2-1.

Loddon Mallee Lightning were the form team over the weekend in the Under 15 Girls, with a comprehensive 7-0 win over Northern. While the Lightning may have been favourites going into the match, no one would have predicted such an emphatic victory. That being said, Northern did well to restrict Loddon Mallee to 1-0 at half time. Second placed North East Diamonds also had a big win this week, defeating Eastern 8-1. On the plus side for the team in red, they were able to score their third goal of the season in the second half. Southern Bluetongues looked the goods in their 3-0 win over North West, Western defeated Rivers 2-0 courtesy of two first half goals while Wimmera South Coast were also on the ball in their 3-1 win over Gippsland. South East turned on the burners in the second half, against Central. After the sides going into the break 1-1, the Cougars went on to win the match 4-1.

Strangely, the North East Diamonds Under 15 Boys were able to replicate the unusual score line their female counterparts achieved against Eastern, running away 8-1 winners. South East and Central couldn’t be separated by full time, that match finishing 0-0 while Northern and Loddon Mallee also shared the spoils, their match finishing 2-2. Western Wolves enjoyed a fairly close run 2-0 win over Rivers while Southern and Wimmera South Coast both had 3-1 wins over North West and Gippsland respectively.

The Loddon Mallee Lightning and North East Diamonds juggernauts rolled on in the Under 17 Girls, with both teams displaying their trademark brand of possession football. Loddon Mallee earned a 3-1 win over a determined Northern side while North East defeated Eastern, with 3-1 the final score. A stellar second half saw Central City overcame South East 4-1 while Western also piled on the second half goals, defeating Rivers 6-2. Wimmera South Coast and Gippsland were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw while the match between North West and Southern at DISC was washed out.

Gippsland Knights caused a massive upset in the Under 17 Boys defeating league leaders Wimmera South Coast 1-0. Wimmera fought hard to try and draw level, but the Knights’ defence repelled everything that was thrown at them. Western Wolves continued the pattern of strong second halves, with 6 goals after the break securing a 9-0 win over Rivers. Central City had the chance to go top but fell 2-1 to the resolute South East Cougars. Southern Bluetongues were too strong for North West, winning 5-0, North East Diamonds came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Eastern FC while Northern and Loddon Mallee drew 1-1.
