Round 4

League Women Thursday – Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles staged the biggest comeback of the season with a hard fought 59-57 win over the Uni Rebels. Michelle Friel was the hero of the game as she nailed four straight free throws to win the game at the end. She also scored the last nine points of the game for the Eagles as they improved their record to 4-0. The Birds jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead, but that disappeared in a hurry as the Rebels charged back in the second quarter with a 28-9 run led by by Ambah Kowcun who hit 15 of her game high 20 in the quarter. The Eagles pulled one point back by the end of the third quarter, but still trailed 47-35 with a quarter to play. The last quarter was a wild scramble as the Birds clawed their way back into the game to eventually win it from the charity stripe thanks to Friel. Friel finished with 19, Faye Armstrong 16 and Trish Graham 13 while veteran Chantelle Lee added 15 in support of Kowcun.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets shut down Ansett 85-38 behind a game high 20 points from Danielle Totham who led a group of four players who reached double figures for the game. Ansett had no answer for the transition minded Bombers who ran off 22 points in the first quarter to just 6 for the Blues. The rout was on. Coach/Player Sam Rioli knocked down 18, Delsey Ah Wang 16 and Erin Geer 12 for the Bombers in support of Totham. Julia Woods hit 8 for the Blues with team mates Elizabeth Paice & Clancy Dorman adding 7 each.

Razzle v Lightning

Lightning rang up their first win of the season with a 51-45 victory over the Razzle. Bonnie Illingworth (12) and Kira Pendlebury (11) led the Lightning attack, but most of the team got into the action scoring points in support. Lightning set up the win with a solid 14-8 first quarter and maintained that lead for the better part of the game. Erin Boyd stood out for the green and gold hitting a game high 15 with Caitlin Wortlehock adding 10.

League Men Thursday – Ansett v Lightning

Lightning dispatched the Blues of Ansett 87-69 to remain unbeaten in Challenge Season competition. The Lightning had to come from behind after Matteo Rowse gave the Blues the start they needed, knocking down 9 of his game high 25 points in the first quarter to give Ansett a 21-15 lead. But, Lightning struck back in the second quarter with a big 26-9 run grab a narrow 41-40 half time lead. Coach Chris Charman had ignited that run with back to back three pointers to start the quarter and big man Craig Martin finished it off with the last 10 consecutive points of the half. Lightning maintained that lead throughout the rest of the game, finishing off the last quarter with a 30-17 run to put the Blues out of contention. Martin finished with 23 for the winners with Harry Fuge tallying 20, Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson 16 and Cameron Bailey 11. Backing up Rowse was Tom Hunt with 14.

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels did a number on the Tracy Village Jets, taking out their match 92-74 behind the accurate shooting of big man Tim Morris who knocked down a game high 38 points. Morris made life a misery for the Jets as he scored from inside the key to outside the arc or from the charity stripe. Travis Ellis from the Jets shouldered most of the scoring output, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Bombers in contention after half time. The Rebels averaged 23 points a quarter as they secured their fourth straight win in this seasons competition. They remain undefeated. Backing up Morris was Bradley Jachmann with 14, Lionel Oger 13 and Lance Schmidt on 10. For the Jets it was Ellis with 28, Jayden Adams 15, Jett Sukcharoen 11 and Darrin Weetra 10.

Razzle v Eagles

The Eagles did it easy against the Razzle winning the contest 92-63. The running game was in full swing for the Birds as they lifted off with a 27-9 run in the first quarter. Henry Bui and Jesse Williams-Hook igniting the run with 8pts each for the quarter. Another burst in the second quarter was enough to give the Birds a very handy 50-23 half time lead that they more or less kept for the remainder of the game. Williams-Hook ended up leading the Eagles with 24, Bui hit 20 and Chris Hart & Reece Turner added 16 apiece. Coach/Player Rob Oliver led the green and gold with 20 while Nathan Radonich had 11.
