Round 3

League Women – Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

On Thursday night the Tracy Village Jets extended their winning streak out to 30 games after outclassing the Razzle to the tune of 77-33. The defending Championship Season premiers were never threatened during the rout beginning with an 18-8 first quarter run and then pushing that lead out to 34-14 at the half time break. A 22-9 run by the Bombers in the third quarter left no doubt as to the outcome of the game. Tikesa Docherty-Cole led all scorers with 22 points followed by Erin Geer with 15, Sam Rioli 14 and Chloe Purvis with 11. For the Razzle only Caitlin Wortleholk managed to hit double figures with 10. Johanna Hayes had 9.

Eagles v Lightning

The Lightning led all the way against the Eagles to claim an early season 54-48 victory over their arch-rivals. Yasmin Decurtins led the way with 12 points for the Lightning as they got off to their best start to a season in years. Lightning took a 4pt lead in a low scoring first quarter 9-5, but put in a good 20-14 second quarter run (led by Decurtins) to lead 29-19 at the half. The Eagles did manage to outscore Lighting 29-25 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap set up by the Lighting in the first half. Decurtins was backed up by Emma Carbone & Claire Bracey with 10 points each. Trish Graham led the Eagles with a game high 15, Faye Armstrong and Alysha-Marie Williams had 9 apiece.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels won a close one against Ansett 44-39 for their first win of the season and they had to stage a strong come from behind charge to do it. Ansett flew off in the first half to lead 21-15 behind the fireworks from Tamiyah Perkins who nailed three consecutive treys in the first quarter to launch Ansett’s attack. The Blues held a 33-26 lead going into the fourth quarter, but failed to sustain their effort as the Rebels stormed back with a 18-6 run to claim the victory. Ambah Kowcun & Jaylene Boundry led the Rebels with 18 and 13 while the Blues got 12 from new recruit Tamara Sheppard and 11 from Perkins.

League Men – Palmerston Power v Razzle

The Palmerston Power edged past the Razzle 62-59 in the men’s league Thursday night game. In a game of shifting fortunes the Power rode a momentum change in the last quarter to claim honours in a game that could have gone either way. Scores were locked at 25 apiece at half time. The Razzle went on a 18-15 third quarter run thanks to Rob Oliver who hit 10 of his game high 19 giving the green and gold a 43-40 lead heading into the last quarter. In the fourth quarter Power’s Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson and Thomas Godwin set the Power on a 22-16 scoring spree to win the day. Hohipa-Wilson finished up with 16 Godwin 11 and Christian Williams 10 while Rob Oliver from the Razzle led all scorers with a game high 19 followed by Stuart Peace with 14.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels remain the only undefeated men’s team after disposing the Tracy Village Jets 60-44. Marcus Ch’ng is proving a handful as he leads the Rebels from the front. The live-wire guard hit a game high 18 with plenty of support from Tyler Jefferson 17 and Jake Kirby 15. The Jets were missing their own live-wire in Michael MacLean, but they still had a go, getting 15 points from ever solid Travis Ellis. However, Ellis was the only player in double figures for the Bombers. After a close first quarter the Rebels began to edge away, leading 28-21 at the break and then kicking away in the last quarter with a 20-13 run for the win.

Ansett v Lightning

Craig Martin hit a league high 28 to lead the Lightning to a narrow 67-61 win over Ansett for their first win of the competition. In a very close encounter the Lightning took a five point lead in the first quarter and held onto it despite the best efforts of the Blues to wrestle it away. Martin got support from Cameron Bailey 13 and Dylan De Santis 11. The return of John King to the Blue’s lineup will put them back into serious contention for a spot in the final four at the end of the season. King hit 25 to lead them with Joseph Stewart adding 13.
