On Sunday 30th March the Northern Knights headed up the Hume Freeway to Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn to take on cross-town rivals, the Calder Cannons in Round 2 of the TAC Cup. In beautiful football conditions both teams’ forward lines looked unstoppable in the first quarter. Peter Wright kicked four early goals for Calder while Reece McKenzie was looking equally as dominate for the Knights. McKenzie kicked two goals himself and set up three others for Kieran Malone, Kyle Langford & first gamer, Matthew Perry to see the Knights trail by two points at quarter time. After Jordan Perry goaled from a Centre Clearance in the opening seconds of the second quarter the game tightened up slightly as both sides’ squandered opportunities in front of goal. Neither side could break away and the margin stayed in single figures for the entire quarter with the Knights holding a slight two point advantage going into the main break. The breeze began to pick up after half time favouring the end to which the Cannons were kicking and they used the assistance well kicking seven goals in the third term. Liam Hunt’s two goals for Northern against the flow of play helped keep the Knights to within 21 points at the final change. In the last quarter it was Knights who came out full of running and pilled on four quick goals within eight minutes to take the lead. Kyle Langford took two strong contested marks and goaled then when Kieran Malone kicked his second major after roving a McKenzie contest the Knights were in front by eight points. The Cannons kept fighting and again brought the margin back to within kick but late goals from Sam Peet and Matt Perry sealed the match for the Knights by 14 points. Reece McKenzie 3 goals & Kyle Langford 5 goals were the standouts up forward for the Knights, while Sam Switkowski, Jordan Perry & Liam Hunt worked tirelessly in the midfield. Ryan Tester in his 2nd TAC Cup game, continued his strong start to the season in defence and was able to slow the influence of the Cannons key forwards after quarter time. This Saturday 5th April the Northern Knights host the Sandringham Dragons at 2:00pm at ‘The Fortress’ (Preston City Oval) in our first home game of the season.
