On Saturday 5th July the Northern Knights hosted the Eastern Ranges at Preston City Oval in round 13 of the TAC Cup. In bright and clear conditions it was the Northern Knights who jumped out the blacks quickly. With the midfield on top driven by Kieran Malone, Jayden Short, Jade Gresham & Zac Ballard the Knights were able to quickly get the ball forward to key target Reece McKenzie. Northern was able to score six goals in the opening nine minutes of play with McKenzie kicking four of those. The Knights continued to dominate for the rest quarter and McKenzie added a further two goals to take his tally to 6.2 by quarter time and gave Northern a 50 point lead. Eastern were then stung into action in the second quarter but were inaccurate inside 50 missing several chances, while the Knights defenders Bailey Jordan, Ciaran Porter and Jake Wild repelled many other attacks. By half time the Ranges had reduced the margin to 36 points. The Knights then began the third quarter as they did the first with McKenzie again looking dangerous as he added a further two goals, while goals to Jade Gresham & Daniel Jarvis extended the margin back out to 58 points heading into the final term. When McKenzie kicked his ninth goal to begin the last Eastern’s chances were gone although he then kicked his tenth soon after and passed up an opportunity for eleven by setting up Jayden Short for goal as the Knights cruised to a 45 point win. McKenzie was named best afield for his 10 goal 19 disposal game while Gresham, Short, Ballard & Malone were all very good through the midfield. Bailey Jordan also continued his fantastic season in defence.
This Sunday 13th July the Northern Knights host the Oakleigh Chargers in Round 14 of the TAC Cup again at Preston City Oval. The Knights will be looking for another win at home against the top of the ladder Chargers as we continue our push for a top 8 spot.
