Dandenong Southern Stingrays are starring in a new road safety advertisement, in the TAC’s latest push to prevent road accidents.
A more informal approach this season is allowing the Stingrays’ under -18 players in AFL Victoria’s TAC Cup competition, to talk road safety in an easier to understand language while in front of the camera.
Stingrays talent manager Mark Wheeler said the videos follow the launch of the TAC, RACV and VicRoads’ Safer P-Platers campaign, which revealed Victorians are 30 times more likely to crash in the first six months they have their probationary licence, compared to when they were learning to drive.
“This figure acts as a strong reminder of how crucial it is for parents to keep acting as mentors for their kids once they get their Ps,” Wheeler said.
“Even once drivers graduate from their Ls to Ps, the learning never stops. We are proud, along with all other TAC Cup clubs, to continue promoting road safety so that people are aware of the importance of safe driving.”
Wheeler went on to launch a further club education tool in support of the TAC message to young drivers on the road.
“To help with the ongoing education the club is devoting an away round in the TAC Cup against the Calder Cannons on June 28th where players who have their P’s have to drive a member of the coaching or support staff to and from a game.”
He added, “ it was a way we could spend time with the players to help with their off field education and help drive the message the TAC message on the need to continue to educate our players as majority are just now getting their P’s and driving in all conditions at least 3 times a week to and from the football club.
“ I think we might need to work out a raffle type system on who gets to drive me and the clubs Car Megamart car though.”
Dandenong’s video centers around night driving and will be one of 12 TAC Cup ads uploaded to the TAC Cup Facebook page and on YouTube, with a prize on offer to the club whose clip attracts the most viewers online.
The videos will also be shown on TAC Cup Future Stars this season, which airs at 1:00pm on Sundays from May 11 on Channel Nine and WIN TV.
TAC Road Safety Project Coordinator Samantha Collins said each club’s clip focuses on one of the nine topics covered in the TAC’s Safer P-Platers campaign in their video, ranging from planning a way home on a night out to driving in adverse weather conditions.
“Other issues like coping with peer pressure, choosing a safe vehicle to buy and avoiding distractions such as mobile phones are all problems that young drivers face,” Ms Collins said.
“All young drivers and their parents should head to saferpplaters.com.au for hints and tips to help them on the road.
“On top of the great work from TAC Cup clubs in promoting awareness, the TAC is determined reduce road trauma for young drivers.”
Drivers aged 18-25 make up only around an eighth of Victorian licence holders, yet account for almost a quarter of road trauma across the state.
The TAC has sponsored AFL Victoria’s TAC Cup competition since its inception in 1992 which the Stingrays are a founding member, one of Australian sport’s longest-running partnerships.
