The Northern Blues Amateurs prevailed by 9 points in their Grand Final rematch against Eley Park at Ruthven Reserve on Saturday.
Emotions soared prior to the match, as the 2013 premiership flag was unveiled by Cazaly Ward councilor Vince Fontana.
Premiership player Damon Marcon touched on the feeling amongst the group as the flag was raised.
“I think it was a rather humbling moment, and one that brought back good memories,” Marcon said.
“Obviously being the grand final rematch both teams went out there with something extra to prove.”
The Blues capatilised on their passion early in the contest, bursting from the gates to a 42 point first quarter lead with a strong breeze at their tails.
But the Sharks were quick to counter, reducing the margin to 8 points at half time with the help of some nifty work up forward by Noel Bahnsen (5 goals).
The game went goal for goal in much of the second half, but the Blues held firm against the wind in the final quarter to secure the victory in front of their home fans.
Tony Vuwai was brilliant in the latter stages for the Blues, flying for contested marks at will to thwart the Sharks’ opportunities on goal.
Northern also received some creative flair from Marcon, James King and Todd Beames who combined for 13 of the Blues’ 17 goals for the game.
Marcon credited the sides ‘Bullant Spirit’ in their ability to hold on for the win.
“In the final quarter we wanted to bring the ball to ground and to limit contested marks,” he said.
“Now we have a busy two weeks at training in store, including a visit from Simon Madden this Wednesday at training.”
“We need to keep focused for our next game against Richmond who is also undefeated.”
The Blues play Richmond Snakes at Kevin Bartlett Reserve next Saturday following the league wide bye this Easter weekend.
