Warriors Player Commits to GCU

The Watsonia Warriors Junior Basketball Club would like to congratulate Matthew Jackson on his signing at GCU.

Matt played with the Warriors from Under 10s all the way through to Under 18s and has been a valuable member of our club.

Well done Matt - we are all behind you!

Young Eagle Matthew Jackson recently signed a letter of intent to play for NBA All Star – Dan Majerle, at the Division 1 University of Grand Canyon in Arizona. It has been a long road for Jackson combining club, state and national duties, along with his year 12 studies he has just completed at Marcellin College.

“ Matt is a born and bred Eagle, playing domestic with Watsonia Warriors and joining the DV rep program at an early age. Matt progressively got better and better during this time, going on to represent Victoria 5 times, as well as Australia in the U/17s & U/19s program, culminating in a Silver medal at the 2012 U/17 World Championships in Kaunus, Lithuania.

There is so much more to Matt than playing basketball. He is educated, funny and just an all round good kid. He still keeps company with his mates he grew up around in his domestic days and school days. In the world of ‘I gotta get mine', Matt is the quintessential team player both on and off the floor.

This year Matt will take the step up into the Senior Men’s Championship team and is excited to finish his career with the Diamond Valley Eagles as a one club player. He has had offers to play elsewhere since he was U/14’s, but has stayed true to Diamond Valley and the people who have coached and been there from his early days. Everyone is very excited for Matt and his family and as usual we are very, very proud and grateful for having Matt in our program." – Alan McAughtry

"Matt is a big kid that can play the three or the four for us, he handles the ball and can shoot it. Matt is a very good passer with a big basketball IQ. He is an extremely skilled player and we have high expectations for him with his ability to play basketball." – Dan Majerle Head Coach

'Lopes Add Jackson to 2014-15 Roster

Grand Canyon University men's basketball and head coach Dan Majerle today announced the signing of Matt Jackson, a 6'8 forward from Diamond Valley, Australia for the 2014-15 season.

"Matt is a big kid that can play the three or the four for us," said Majerle. "He handles the ball and can shoot it. Matt is a very good passer with a big basketball IQ. He is an extremely skilled player and we have high expectations for him with his ability to play basketball."

Jackson joins Gerard Martin, Kerwin Smith and Boubacar Toure who each signed a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 15.

Jackson is the second Australian to sign in the 2014-15 class, with Martin being the first. The roster also includes another Aussie in Sam Daly who is redshirting this season. Additionally, it marks the third International signing of this class, as Toure hails from Senegal.

Jackson is coming off a highly successful campaign with the Diamond Valley Eagles where he averaged 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He shot 52.5 percent from the floor and scored 20 or more points in six contests. He dropped a season-high 28 on 11-for-20 shooting against the Geelong Supercats on June 30. Jackson had 12 rebounds and five assists in that game.

Jackson played for Australia during the 2012 U17 World Championships, averaging 4.9 points in eight games. He scored nine in games against France and Argentina.

"I am excited and looking forward to playing basketball and studying at Grand Canyon University next year," said Jackson. "The entire coaching staff, led by coach Dan Majerle, made me feel really welcome. They all share the same passion for basketball as I do. I feel the basketball program is strong and improving and I am happy to be a part of this. Grand Canyon University feels like home and I can't wait to get started."
