This week was a highly anticipated Grand final played at Mentone Grammar in Keysborough on a beautiful spring like day. There was a small breeze blowing to one end but it was an ideal day to play football. We were up against St Bede’s Mentone Tigers who were the minor premiers, and had only lost two games and in the two games we played we won one by 11 and St Bede’s won by 7 so I knew it would be a close game.
The boys were very excited before the game. We talked about what we needed to do to be successful. The main goal of the day was to be first to the ball and tackle hard to stop St Bede’s from getting their running game going which has been the key to their success. The boys got to experience a great day. After running through a great banner made by Nella Daniels, we lined up for the national anthem and then it was game on.
The first quarter was very tight with the ball moving from one half forward line to the other, with both defences on top and repelling everything. The ground was very big and the young boys from both sides had to run very hard to get the ball forward. Our midfield started to get more of the ball and our eagerness was causing a few turnovers but we started to get the ball more into our forward line. Then against the run of play St Bede’s got the ball and ran from one end of the ground to the other and scored a trademark goal. A great highlight of the day was the boys did not drop off but went back to the middle and immediately drove the ball forward and worked hard to keep the ball forward. Their persistence paid off and a goal to Tommy W. Quarter Time scores WPH 1.0.6 to St Bede’s Mentone 1.0.6.
The second quarter started and the ball immediately went into our forward line. The forwards were working hard to hold the ball in the forward line and we were able to score a behind. The game then went back to normal with the ball moving backwards and forwards between the two defences with both sides enjoying possession. We got the ball forward again and a fantastic piece of play from Nathan Jago who got the ball to Tommy Warner who scored a second goal. The boys tackling had been ferocious and they were all working hard to stop St Bede’s having any space so that they could run and carry as they like too. Half time scores WPH 2.1.13 to St Bede’s Mentone 1.0.6. As predicted it was going to be a very close game.
At the end of the half time break I got all the boys in and we talked about the premiership quarter and that we had to really work hard to score and put some distance between us and St Bede’s. The Third quarter started and we immediately took the ball forward and held it in our forward line. St Bede’s were defending desperately and holding the boys out. We were just a little untidy with our ball delivery which meant we were always under pressure. Then against the run of play St Bedes ran the ball out of defence to a three on one in their forward line. Oliver was outstanding against a few boys as he was able to hold them up until the support arrived. The ball went back into our forward line but with all the possession in our forward line we had only managed to score three behinds. Again, St Bede’s got the ball over the back and they were running the ball into their forward line. Hunter who gave his opponent a 15 metre start ran the opposition down and got the ball back, fantastic effort. The ball went into our forward line Rhys to A.J to Harvey and a goal right on three quarter time. Three quarter time scores WPH 3.4.22 to St Bede’s Mentone 1.0.6. For all our hard work we were only 16 points up, it was going to be a tough last quarter.
The last quarter started and you could immediately see that St Bede’s Mentone were going to throw everything into trying to score. The defence was under immense pressure from the start of the quarter but with the help of the midfield we were holding St Bedes. The wind had picked up a little and given our pressure we were forcing St Bedes to kick out of bounds. The boys were working really hard to man up and this was making St Bede’s ball movement very hard. The boys were tackling everything and were spoiling marks. Unfortunately at the 10 minute mark St Bede’s scored a goal and they raced back to the centre with enthusiasm. All their efforts were starting to take its toll on the boys, who were starting to look tired. It was going to be a long five minutes. The boys went back to the middle and immediately took the ball forward but were repelled again when the ball went into St Bede’s forward line. A defensive mark from A.J stopped an attack but the ball came straight back and resulted in a behind. Another defensive mark from Tommy W repelled the ball, run and carry from Rhys, Kobi and Hunter to get the ball into our forward line. One minute left and the ball is back into St Bede’s forward line mark to Tommy W, boys on the boundary line start the countdown and then the Siren.
