We really did have a fantastic night last Saturday night where over 180 people enjoyed the excellent meal from Murphy's Roving Roast from Picola and the reason for the evening. As you can gather, we are pretty pleased with ourselves in that we are the only club in the GVFL this year to have all our teams playing in the finals and; as an added bonus; to celebrate the fact that we have won the prestigious George HUNTER Champion Club cup for the third year on the trot. We also took the opportunity to appoint four of our wonderful servants as Life Members of our Club which were were all very well received.
First up was current player Stephen SCOTT who was presented by Richard WARBURTON who coached Scotty when he first came up from our Under 18's. Stephen has now racked up over 200 Senior club games and was a member of our most recent premierships. Stevo now joins his Mum and Dad Lucy and Frank SCOTT as Life Members of our Club.
Next up was Ross ROBINS who was presented by immediate past president and great mate Ray DOBSON who spoke glowingly of Ross's performance with our club going back to when he played in our Senior Premiership as a 16 year old in 1967 to later become President of our Club and remain still serving on the general committee. Ross was thrilled to bits and became a bit emotional when he saw son Scott and daughter Brooke in the crowd with their partners. This was a very happy time for all of us. Ross ROBINS is a most worthy Elected Life Member of our Club.
No. 3 John HUESTON was then annointed by Club Legend the "Panther" Des CAMPBELL. This presentation too was heart felt and a bit emotional as Des and big Huey go all the way back to the early 1960's when as 9 and 10 year olds they began their footy career at the St George's Road school oval with the United Under 13 B's. Des brought up these times as tho' they were yesterday telling the crowd that if they kicked a point during a game they had done well despite copping some terrible hidings - but things turned good when these boys came up to the United Thirds in 1966 and progressed. Huey captained our Third XVIII to be Premiers in 1967 - he was clearly the best man on the ground during this game and won the GVFL Pattison Medal that year. John progressed up into the Seniors where he played over 100 games before chronic knee trouble put an end to his footy. Since then Huey has hardly missed a United game and has always been a keen helper behind the scenes up until recently when he and wife Glenda retired. Since then Big John has been a Vice President of the Club and acted as the gofer for our Treasurer. Huey too was quite thrilled to be with eldest son Jarrod joining in the celebration and then realising elder brother Allan and his wife Pamela were present. Johnny HUESTON now joins brother Allan and their parents Phyllis and Keith HUESTON as an elected Life Member of the Shepparton United Football Club.
No. 4 Gavin HALL when announced by mate Barry JOHNSON nearly brought the roof down from the applause. Gavin received a standing ovation and then when he saw his kids Chrystal and Phillip in the crowd the bloody water works started - not just from Gav either as it really was a beautiful emotional few minutes. Johnno spoke of Gav from the time they met in Tom's bar at the Hotel Australia and introduced him to our Club. Gavin now operates the Jeans West stores in Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong after being the accountant for Mr Peter COPOLOUS. Johnno mentioned that since Gavin has been the club's Treasurer for the last 10 years (if you don't mind) Gav has brought a real touch of professionalism with the clubs finances and has been a very steadying influence and an absolute fantastic asset when ordering and organising anything and everything for the club. Another very worthy Elected Life Member of the Shepparton United Football Club.
Congratulations to Scotty, Robbo, Huey and Gav - Stephen SCOTT, Ross ROBINS, John HUESTON and Gavin HALL. P.S. Thanks to those who organised the night and to those who arranged for the families to be present - it was a real nice touch. Well Done.
