Under 18's - Very heavy conditions underfoot presented a genuine challenge for the Tigers as they faced a determined Camperdown side. The hosts had the benefit of a moderate breeze and they made most of early running. They scored the only goal of the 1st quarter and thoroughly deserved their 9 point lead at quarter time. The Tigers came roaring back with a renewed intensity in the 2nd term. They attacked constantly and seemed to revel in the heavy going. Working the ball around the forward line to score regularly with the next result being a 3 goal margin to Portland at the long break. Despite kicking into the breeze in the 3rd term, it was still Portland who controlled the run of play. Although drizzling rain deteriorated the surface further, the skills on offer were quite acceptable with the occasional lapse into a rugby maul. A 31 point lead to the Tigers was a fair reflection of the game to this point. The game degenerated into an arm wrestle in the final term with neither side having any clear advantage and goals being at a premium. Thus the Tigers maintained their lead and ran out winners by 42 points. In an even side Portlands best players were Luke Hodge, Joe King, Brett Uebergang, Jake Cleary-Jones Callum Greenham and Patty Haylock.
Final Scores
Portland 8.13-61
Camperdown 2.7-19
Reserves - In spite of kicking to the scoring end the Tigers made hard work of scoring and the quarter was well advanced when they registered their 1st score. This was quickly followed up by a couple more enabling Portland totake a 12 point margin into the initial break. This was quickly extended in the 2nd term but the hosts came back strongly. The endeavour from both sides was exemplary with Camperdown slightly on top in this phase of the game. Their defence shut Portland out effectively for most of the quarter resulting in a narrowing in the margin to 9 points in Portlands favour at the long break. Goals were becoming a very scarce commodity with both sides having difficulty penetrating the opposition defence but the Tigers kept boring in and pushing the ball goalwards. Their persistence was rewarded with a couple of valuable majors towards the end of the 3rd quarter, enabling Portland to edge out to a 22 point lead at the final change. The Magpies put the heat on the visitors in the final term and cut into the deficit to get within a 3 points leaving the Tigers with a narrow but deserved win. Lots of good battles with Jayden Clark, Josh Chapman, Michael Carr (4 goals), Andrew Symons, Damien Bell and Paul Young named in the best.
Final Scores
Portland 7.6-48
Camperdown 6.9-45
Seniors - The Tigers had the breeze advantage but it was the hosts who enjoyed the dominant possession in the early stages due to the loose defence and an inclination to play from behind from Portland. Towards the end of the quarter, the Tigers regrouped and injected some cohesion into their game. A couple of badly required goals saw them on top by 17 points at the first change. In a turn around of fortunes, the 2nd term saw Camperdown make full use of the breeze and using a strategy of attacking strongly through the centre corridor, they carved out numerous scoring chances. On the other hand, Portland werer simply abysmal. They couldn't mount any forward momentum and as such they failed to score for the quarter. Thus, half time saw the Magpies some points in front. Camperdown werekicking into the wind but still held dominance in terms of skill level, running power and most of all on the scoreboard. This stretched their lead to 15 points at the last change, having the Tigers a mammoth task to acheive a win. And indeed it proved well beyond the Tigers as Camperdown overpowered the rather insipid performance that Portland offered in the last quarter. A lot of examination of the game plan and each individual's role in executing the plan needs to be addressed if the side is to play any significant part in the final part of the season. Portland's better players were fairly hard to detect but those worthy of mention were Ben Malcolm, Luke Van Heugten, Daniel Falcone, Marcus England and Jake Myles.
