Rutherglen’s latest Barton medallist Jarrad Farwell says he didn’t think he was a top 10 chance going into last night’s vote count at the Albury Commercial Club.
The midfielder polled three votes in round 18 to draw level with Thurgoona’s Jayden Kotzur on 20 votes in a sensational finish.
The 23-year-old is Rutherglen’s first Barton medallist since Ben Davis in 2005.
Farwell said his teammates deserved the credit for the win.
“I didn’t think I was a top 10 chance so it was a big surprise,” he said.
“I’d like to thank my team mates who helped me settle in and got me so much of the footy.
“The Rutherglen Football Netball Club has been so welcoming this year – it has a great culture and is a great place to be around.”
Coach Karl Jacka congratulated the key midfielder.
"Jazz has been nothing but brilliant since he arrived," Jacka said.
"We knew the calibre of person and quality of player we were getting as Henty produce some of the best young talent in the area.
"Jazz has slotted into our on-ball unit and been a major factor in the senior side improving this year. Our expectations of Jazz are driven by his own high standards and we have challenged him again and again. This award is great recognition for someone that works hard and hunts the footy. I look forward to watching him carry the form of the past two weeks into finals."
Farwell says he still has room to improve ahead of the finals.
“I definitely could have been a bit more consistent with my performances,” he said.
“Coming across from Henty, it was a bit of an adjustment as the Tallangatta league is bit more of a contested brand of footy, whereas the Hume league is a bit more open.
“I’m looking forward to getting out to Sandy Creek this weekend to start the finals.”
Farwell, and Martin Brennan were both named in the TDFL senior team of the year – while Shaune Brewer finished third in the reserves best and fairest. Brennan was also named TDFL Rising Star Of The Year. Congratulations to Jake Meyer, Callum Dunstan, Nat Scott and Jack Andison who also polled well in their respective grades.
Earlier in the night, President Greg Lumby stole the show as he delivered an emotional acceptance speech when accepting his 2016 Volunteer Of The Year award.
