A QUIET achiever and a young leader were among those to be honored at yesterday’s Australia Day celebration in Wangaratta’s King George V Gardens.
Wangaratta’s citizen of the year for 2014, Kevin Mahoney (pictured) had to travel 1700km from Bundaberg to pick up his award, given to him in front of about 400 people at the morning event.
Erin Ritchie (pictured)received the young citizen of the year award for her various leadership roles in the community, while the Wangaratta RSL sub-branch picked up the community event of the year award for its 90th anniversary of the unveiling of the Wangaratta Cenotaph.
Wangaratta wasn’t the only place to celebrate Australia Day yesterday, with hundreds attending celebrations at some 14 towns around the region.
Kevin was a long time former coach & President of the Combined Churches FC, before they changed thier name to the Kangaroos FC, as well as playing 350 senior O&KFNL games for the Moyhu FC over a 25 year career.
Kevin established St. Patrick's Church Bingo back in 1976 & was still a weekly volunteer until 2013 & is involved with St. Catherines Hostel & Nth Est Health.
Kevin is currently club champion at Wareena Bowls Club & a regular at Jubilee Golf Club.
