TYREPOWER CUP
IT’S OURS!
It’s always nice to win, even better to win away from home, even better again to beat Blackwood, even better again to retain the Tyrepower cup.
After the B’s set the tone, the A’s went on a rampage with a first half goal barrage, including an amazing 11 goal second quarter. The second half was a more dour affair but at the end of the day, I guess you settle for a 66 point win – the Woods were felled.
It proved to be a whole team effort with everybody contributing (maybe except for poor Carbo Ladhams who did his ankle in the first 5 minutes). Players were hard at it and the Woods running brigade and defence proved quite loose in the first half.
I apologise for a lack of stats but the coach has the stats sheet, so I’ll do most from memory
Ironbank 7-4 18-7 21-12 24-12
Blackwood 5-0 7-1 10-6 14-6
1st Quarter
The players were greeted with a cloudy but fine day. Ironbank have been gathering momentum with 3 wins on the trot whilst Blackwood had fallen to 8th with a 66 point loss to Mt Barker.
Blackwood started the better and had 2 goals on the board in the first 3 minutes. They seemed first to the ball early and it brought back images of the Onkas game. To our credit we kept the ball held up and McGoo put us on the board at the 8 minute mark. However, Bennets for Blackwood slipped away from Ottas twice to score majors. Halfway through the quarter we are down 1-2 to 4-0.
All of a sudden we snapped into action. Great centre clearances firstly from Yeoy who went long to the goalsquare and Nappies marked and goaled. Secondly, Sheary worked it out with a handball to McGoo to Yeoy who hit up the diminutive giant Simmo Hulme. Simmo kicked accurately.
We then hit the lead at the 19 minute mark when Munny started the chain of clever play through Sneeds and Rhys. The ball ended up with the coach who knows how to take these clever one on one marks. His goal put the score at 4-2 to 4-0.
Our defence was holding firm and they picked off the short passes of the Woods. Munny was everywhere and he was well assisted by Scotty Walter, Sneeds and “Kumar” Desengo.
We went further ahead when the coach marked and put it onto BT for a major. Their 5th goal comes from a costly blunder – a missed mark from our kick , which enables them to score. However, Sheary, who was having a great quarter, won the ball out of the centre and then within a flash he’s got the ball again to kick an outside of the foot shot from the left forward pocket.
We go to the break looking the better team with more precise handball and foot passing. Great quarters from Sheary, McGoo and Will Muirden.
2nd Quarter
We came out firing with 4 goals in the first 8 minutes. Sheary got the ball rolling with 2 majors. He kicked truly after Morgy had repelled the first attack into our defence. Then Desengo worked it to Batto and onto Lads who dived with a 8.5 degree of difficulty and flicked the handball to Sheary. Sheary loves these!
McGoo with Yeoy were dominating the centre and he hit up Will for a mark and goal.
At the 8minute mark, Lads marks and goals to put us up 11-6 to 5-0. They scored a quick major but the rest of the quarter belonged to the Thunderers. A total domination where we kicked the next 7 majors.
Batto kicked 3 of these and showed everybody how awesome he can be. The 250 game veteran, Nappies Smith, also kicked 3 in this time. His first came from a mark 40 m out and he got to have the same shot again when a Woods dude was yellow carded for mouthing off. Napps kicked the next when Nocka cleared it out of the centre. Turn back the clock – Nappies 3 goals in 2 minutes.
We went to the break 72 points up and completely in charge of the game. Great halves from Sheary who had 18 disposals to half time. McGoo, Yeoy with Will getting plenty and Munny marking most of their attacks forward.
3rd Quarter
Ironbank appeared out early from the rooms. The faithful all of a sudden felt apprehensive because we appeared early last week and had a disastrous 3rd quarter.
Not to worry. Although the goal feast dried up we did not let the Woods in too much.
After good kicking from both sides in the 1st half, there were many misses with both sides kicking 3-5 for the quarter. Light rain had also made marking that little harder.
4th Quarter
The last quarter saw Blackwood work harder as a group and maybe our boys slackened a bit. They kicked the first 3 goals in 6 minutes and had taken 8 marks in that time. They scored another major at the 12 minute mark – 4 goals without reply!
We then settled, lifted our work rate and kicked the last 3 goals of the game. It shows that if you drop your work rate, teams in this league will get a break on you.
Great games from our running players with Yeoy having 29 disposals and 11 clearances, Sheary 28 disposals and 4 goals and McGoo and Will Muirden also in the high 20’s.
Munny took 11 towering marks and BT also had 20 possessions, proving to be an elusive forward/winger.
Goal Kickers: Nappies 6, Sheary 4, Batto 3, C Ladhams 3, B Thomas 3,
Best Players: – Nocka (a great lion hearted effort in ruck), Sheary, McGoo, Nappies and Will Muirden.
Honourable mentions to Benny Thomas and the great work from the defensive unit, in particular, Desengo, Scotty Walter, Sneeds and Munny.
