Another disappointing day last week with all three sides losing which puts an end to finals hopes. Good to see the four bottom age U17’s helping out the Under 19’s last week and performing well. Well done to Kyle Chalker on his 50th game in the reserves last week as well as Dayne Fuss who backed up from the Under 19’s and played his first reserves game. Congratulations to Matt Lawson who played his 250th game for the club last week in the senior’s game; Matt also coached the U17’s Sunday to a win in the Qualifying Final. Unfortunately the U12’s and U13’s lost but both have the second chance this week; good luck to all three teams as they continue their finals series. Last week’s junior’s results and Sunday’s finals games listed below. Let’s get behind our junior players and show them plenty of support. The Vets struggled for numbers last week and went down to Mooroolbark; we need to get plenty of numbers to the last game against Kilsyth on the 10th August. Saturday we are back at home against Mitcham when we are hosting the Ladies Race Day; $50 gets lunch and a great afternoon of entertainment; contact Mark Godfrey for tickets. Presentation night this year will be on 3rd October with all four sides together in a big night at the Hungarian Club, $80 per head to celebrate the season in style. Get down to the club on Thursday night for a drink and a meal to hear this weeks selection; Joker Poker continues with the jackpot continuing to grow by the week. Andrew Derksen advises that he will be stepping down as President as season end; time for someone new to step up and lead Upper Gully into the future; see below for Derko’s announcement. The last home game will have the King Club hosting their luncheon in conjunction with the VIP Area; $75pp for non-members includes drinks and meal. Anyone interested in joining the King Club members in the VIP area please contact Peter Hards or Andy Neville. Milestones
Matt Lawson chalked up his 250th Game for Upper Gully last week against Templestowe in the senior’s game. Matt started with Bluebirds playing 157 games in a long junior career before heading to the senior club and playing 30 games in the Under 18’s during 1999 and 2000. During this time Matt played his first game which was in the reserves against North Ringwood during round 14 and made his senior debut against Doncaster in round 17. Matt moved out of the U18’s for the 2001 season and over the next couple of years played a mixture of seniors and reserves football which included the Reserves Premiership in 2002. Matt has since gone on to have a very good senior career playing in the 2006 and 2009 Grand Finals and topping it off with the seniors flag in 2010. During 2005 Matt played his 100th game against Templestowe in round 17 and during 2011 his 200th game against Bayswater in round 7. Some of the awards Matt has received over the years include the Dennis Callahan Best Under 21 player in 2003, the Dave Baker Most Courageous Award in 2012, the Best Playing Clubman Award last year as well Matt was rewarded with Life Membership of the club at the end of the 2010 season. Matt has now played 37 reserves games and 213 seniors games for the club.
Kyle Chalker played his 50th Game for the club in the reserves against Templestowe. Kyle played in the Under 18’s between 2005 and 2006 playing 24 games before having a spell from Footy. Kyle returned in 2009 and played his first club game in the reserves during round one against Coldstream.
Dayne Fuss after playing in the under 19’s played his first reserves game for the club last week. Also in the Under 19’s were four bottom age Under 17’s players playing their first games. Well done to Bailey Code, Dylan Janke, Sandon Jennings and Bayleigh Dickinson.
UFTG Vets
Last Sunday the Vets ventured to Heights Reserve in Mooroolbark and were confronted with both sides struggling numbers; as the day was good weather wise the boys decided to play 16 a side. We were missing some regulars in J Mac, Sturter, Jimmy C. Big Eachan, Chris and Shaun Smith as well as Jeff Franken missing his first Vets game for the club. But we did rope in some numbers with Dale “Goal Umpire” Bowers being called in from work and Lowey answering the call to help out to prove that we are a determined team in getting on the ground each week. The game did not go according to plan in the first half even with the efforts of Jas Zinnow, Heather and Moory across half back and the onballers led by Casey, Andy Lee, Andy Hayman, Juzzy Wise and Derko. Some cameo appearances were made by Lowey, Dale Bowers and Simon “Coach” McGillien during the game which helped with players getting rests. The side went into half time with no goals, but in true Upper Gully fashion came out in the second half to kick five, with Warren Hillier and Heath Wilson on the ball and Steve Lemm up forward getting some good footy, Matt “The Professor” Clarke was also playing another good game. The two Andy’s were turning back the clock and giving each other plenty of the ball while Andy Cashin and Adrian Owen were struggling with injuries. Last game is on Sunday the 10th August against Kilsyth at Kings Park; so the boys are hoping to finish off with a victorie to build for next season. Meanwhile training will continue on Thursday Evenings at Kings Park. Get down for a run then stick around for a meal and beer. Anyone interested in playing this year please contact Simon McGillien or Jason Zinnow.

The U17’s this week are playing for a spot in the Grand Final while the U12’s and U13’s need to win to progress to the Preliminary Finals the following week.
