Last week in freezing conditions at Silvan we came away with three good wins after the U19’s finished the day off under lights with Jake Cawsey kicking ten; the U19’s with Gary Nash in charge and Gatesy taking a back seat had Corey Wakefield missing playing for Eastern Ranges on Sunday. Good to see Frankie DiDonato play his first senior game for the year and Tim Riseley continue some great form while in the reserves Ash Hards had the ball on a string and Jayden Cutts kicked five. Also in the reserves game it was good to see Lachie Roberts play his first game for the year after returning from injury. The reserves have now moved to the top of the ladder on percentage, one game ahead of seventh spot, while the U19’s have stayed third and the seniors are still in fourth only percentage behind third. Saturday will see the senior and reserves at home against Heathmont while the U19’s are away at Templestowe. The Netball side plays Mitcham this Friday; good luck girls. With two games before finals it is likely that the U14’s, U13’s, U12’s and U11’s will all finish third this year and take part in the finals series; the U15’s are sitting in fifth spot by percentage over sixth so need to finish of well to make finals while both the U17’s look likely to miss; although the U17D’s have an outside chance if they win both games. The U12’s had a big win last week against Norwood with Jake Smith, Nicholas Stubbs and Matthew Hocking all kicking five goals each, while Cooper Mitchell also kicked five in the U13’s. Thanks to Susan from the U12’s who has put her hand up for the junior’s secretary role. Good luck to all junior sides on Sunday; times and venues below for all sides. The annual THF Luncheon is on this Saturday the 11th July; this is an important event to help raise funds so the club can continue to develop the junior club coaches and players that will end up with the seniors. The day starts at 12pm with Jason Wood (Federal Member for Latrobe the guest speaker) and costs $60 per head with a two course meal and drinks included; contact Peter Hards ASAP for tickets; also we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1965 reserves premiership team; the 30th anniversary of the Bluebirds under 15’s team, the 40th anniversary of the Bluebirds under 14’s team as well as the 10th anniversary of the 2005 under 13’s team. Looking through the junior premiership sides below highlights many of these players went on to play senior footy at Upper Gully which shows the strong links between the junior’s and senior’s over the years. 11th July will also be a general past players day from all eras - all welcome to enjoy the afternoon catching up with friends. Memberships are still available please see Andy Lee or check out the website for further info. Upcoming events include the IPod Night on the 18th July; contact Matt Lawson to get your song booked in; and also the Ladies Race Day on 1st August; so put these dates in your diary and contact the club if tickets required. Another great night was enjoyed by all the Ladies last week with some entertaing acts by the players and good work from the waiters. The Committee has been busy so far this season and as always would welcome anyone willing to help out; please contact Peter Hards or Tom Caruso if you are able to help out. Don’t forget to check out the website; http://www.uftgfc.sportingpulse.net for all the latest news and photo’s from around the club. The club welcomes on board Trident Leasing Australia as a new sponsor, contact Peter Nicholls on 1300 883 718 for all your funding needs, also iTrak Real Estate are on board sponsoring Upper Gully shorts, for any real estate requirements contact Mel on 0439 513 004. Good Luck in 2015 Upper.....Go the Red and Blue!
Terry Hopkins Junior Development Foundation
In 2001 a coterie was formed by some interested members and ex-players with a view to forming a foundation whereby a support group could be set up to assist the transition of junior players into the senior ranks of Upper Gully. This group was originally named “The Royals Club” and their agenda was to offer financial, attendance and moral support, mentoring, guest speakers and skill specialists etc. to keep our great club going.
Our target group was the Under 15’s and 16’s of the Upper Gully Juniors in conjunction with the Colts (under 18’s) of the Senior Club.
Neville Roberts was the prime instigator of this initiative and through consultation with the senior club, his idea was taken to the junior club and the birth of the then “Royals Club” took place.
It was agreed that a U/16 player would be selected at the end of the season as “The Royals Rising Star”. A unique criterion was set for the selection of this award with the intention being to select a player most likely to play senior football at Upper Gully.
In 2005 the club lost dear friend and devotee Terry Hopkins following a long battle with cancer. In recognition of his courage and passion for our club, which was an inspiration to all, the former “Royals Club” was renamed in his honour.
Over the past years, the Terry Hopkins Foundation has continued to evolve from what began as a passionate attempt to set up a formal organisation to assist the senior club in promoting and developing players for the future.
Last year the THF did away with the membership fee and instead decided to concentrate its fundraising on the annual luncheon. As all THF members were required to be a member of the Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club as per the constitution, part of the THF membership fee was returned to the club. With this change now all money raised at the Luncheon will go to the THF. Of course anybody wishing to be a member of the Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club is more than welcome to do so.
The charter of the THF is simple; it is devoted to raising funds to help ensure the future of the club through the support and development of our young players.
All proceeds from THF fundraising initiatives are used to benefit our younger players. Primarily the THF provides in conjunction with the Junior Club funding and support for the development of our junior players through coach education provided by “The Modern Game”.
Since 2001 the THF has sponsored the club’s under 19 “Rising Star” award, provided warm-up jackets for the club’s under 17’s and under 19s, funded information/education evenings for the club’s juniors, provided Sherrin footballs for awards to under 17 players, continued to contribute funds to retain the services of “The Modern Game” and provided funding for the under 19/under 17 Boot Camp amongst other contributions.

King Club 2015
Neil Thompson is running the King Club this year and has come up with a new initiative to get the guys talking at half time in the rooms each week about the footy. The idea is for members to cast votes (3,2,1) on the player they think has had the greatest impact in the first half of the game and has gotten the team off to a flying start. The votes will be tallied up over the year and the player with the most votes will receive the King Club Flyer Trophy. Voting slips will be handed out to members of the King Club on Saturday. The King Club is a support group for the Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club. For 2015 members of the King Club have access to the rooms during the senior game half time were they receive food and drinks complimentary during the break; there are raffles to raise further money with joker poker. You become a club member and have free entry into home games and also receive a king club polo. There is also a King Club social event during the year, which includes food and drink. Neil Thompson can be contacted for further Details.neilt101@hotmail.com; mobile: 0400 921 357.
