It was a cold and dreary Saturday afternoon, but the Swans were red hot in a dominating performance over the High Park Demons. The final horn sounded with the Swans winning 21.19.145 to 2.0.12.
In full rebuilding mode, the struggling Demons had only managed 14 points in their last two games combined. The Swans took the opportunity to give a full 80 minutes to a number of rookie players and move more experienced players into different positions.
Veterans Matt Powell and Nathan Strom led the Swans by kicking a combined 13 goals. Ian Baldwin, Josh Evans and Greg Bridges all chipped in with goals of their own.
“This was an important game for us,” said coach Rod Frank after the game. “Regardless of the opposition we needed to play Swans football and ensure we were doing things the right way. We didn’t slip into bad habits just because we were ahead on the scoreboard.”
With the win, the Ottawa Swans are 2-1 on the season, moving into the top 4 ahead of the Etobicoke Kangaroos who lost for the first time on the weekend.
Next week the Swans will face their biggest challenge of the young season as they square off against the Broadview Hawks. The Hawks bounced the Swans from the preliminary final last season, and have won the last 4 meetings between the two teams in commanding fashion. But this game will be a must win for Broadview, as they have started the 2016 season slowly and cannot afford to lose another match this early. The first bounce will take place at 2:00pm at the Manotick Polo Club.
The women had the week off, but will wear the red and white and play against the Montreal Angels in the first full field match of the year. This match will go prior to the men on June 18th. It starts at 11 am.
