Floreat climb to fifth after defeating Army

Floreat Athena climbed to fifth place on the National Premier Leagues WA table with a 3-1 win over Armadale at E&D Litis Stadium yesterday.

Jamie Eames put the home side in front from the penalty spot before John Thornley levelled, also from the spot, in first-half stoppage time. But second half goals to Jack Allen and Bobby Wilson earned Floreat the points.

The home side had made a lightning start and had the ball in the net after only 40 seconds. But Ludovic Boi’s low shot was disallowed for offside.

Armadale, who were looking for their first win since week two, hit back but Jackson Bealey’s free kick on the edge of the penalty area flashed over the top.

The home side looked dangerous at set pieces and from Boi’s corner on 23 minutes, Wilson’s header was cleared off the line by Jake Sardelic. But five minutes later the home side made the breakthrough.

Boi’s through ball sent Callum Fransz into the box and he fell under Sam Loveless’ challenge, prompting referee Michael Jasinski to point to the spot. Eames stepped up and despatched the spot kick to give Floreat the lead.

Armadale were looking for their big striker Thornley at every occasion and he was causing problems for the Floreat central defenders. And in first half stoppage time they made it count.

Dannie Richman’s cross found the striker, who appeared to be pushed in the back by Wilson. The referee, who was well placed, pointed straight to the spot.

Thornley picked himself up and sent Tom Dixon the wrong way to level the scores at the break.

Floreat opened the second-half brightly and regained the lead within three minutes of the restart. Eames found space down the left and raced past two Armadale defenders before finding Ashley Corker.

His shot was parried by Mathew Gould but the rebound fell to Allen, who scored with a bullet like shot into the top corner of the net.

The home side went close again on the hour but Corker’s snap shot on the edge of the penalty area was cleared off the line by Alec Solomons.

Floreat were dominating and moments later Fransz waltzed past three Armadale defenders to put him one-on-one with the keeper. But Gould spread himself well to deny Fransz before Wilson’s volley crashed off the crossbar.

Armadale coach Lee Bamber brought on Nicholas Tatasciore and Llewellyn Bake and the move paid dividends with the visitors starting to create good chances. Mitch Castrilli’s shot was well saved by Dixon on 74 minute, and Bake sent Faustinho Machochi clear moments later but the striker’s shot flashed inches wide of the target.

But it was the home side who added to their lead with eight minutes remaining. Boi’s corner from the left was headed home by Wilson and the points were safe.

Next week Floreat travel to Stirling Lions in the quarter-finals of the Cool Ridge Cup, while Armadale have a midweek NPL WA catch up game against Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park.
