Bayswater overcome Armadale attack

Holders Bayswater City made it through to the next Cool Ridge Cup round with a blasé but effective 3-1 win over an eager Armadale side at Frank Drago Reserve on Easter Monday.

Steve Burton scored a brace for Bayswater, bookending a stunning free-kick conversion by Jamie Coyne. The goal scorer for Armadale was Alex Clarke.

Armadale tested the defending cup champions in the first half with persistent attacks from Clarke and Faustinho Machochi proving quite the challenge for Bayswater’s Chris Saldaris and Trent Kay.

Bayswater showed signs of fatigue early on and struggled to innovate in their delivery of balls to strikers Burton and David Heagney, but drew first blood when a corner from James Isaia met the head of Kay. Burton got a toe to it to push it past Armadale keeper Mathew Gould.

Nevertheless, Armadale were determined and a fight back, led by experienced midfielder Jason Barrera, delivered a ball to Clarke who beat his man and went one-on-one with keeper Devon Spence. While Spence stumbled, Clarke leapt over his fallen opponent and maintained his composure to walk the ball in to an empty goal.

Clarke continued to take his chances against Andy Reale and Kay, with assistance from a versatile Alec Solomons, making sure this game was anything but easy for the hosts.

Bayswater eventually found a way through as Brian Farrell crossed a ball to Burton from the left wing in the 73rd minute. Armadale paid the price for some undisciplined defending as Burton got a foot to it and put it past Gould again.

Armadale certainly had their chances to steer this game in another direction and capitalize on an uncharacteristically flat Bayswaster, and they missed numerous opportunities in the second half to do just that.

Bayswater persevered while Armadale, again paid for wayward defending. Rewarded with a free kick in the 81st minute, Coyne’s execution looked effortless but it was way too good for Gould and sealed the win.

City coach Chris Coyne said he was pleased to take the win and continue the path towards FFA Cup qualification.

“It’s always a tough game against Armadale and full credit to them for rolling in and putting up a tough match,” he said.

“Cup games are always just about being in the draw the next morning and although our performance wasn’t all rosy, we’ll take the win.

“Of course, we’re keen to defend the cup title but obviously we also want to finish top of the league as well. We’ll just take it one game at a time, but we’ll continue to raise the bar and we’ll keep asking more of the players each week as they grow and develop.”
