Round 8 - June 16

Under 9 Blue

The U/9 Blue girls had a tough game on Sunday against the Yarra Jets in Clifton Hill. Our girls had to run their hearts out on a half pitch instead of a quarter pitch. So they were well and truly exhausted after the game. Everyone worked hard and played well - we are looking forward to playing the Kensington yellow girls next week at home.

Under 11 Joeys

The girls demonstrated great character and fighting qualities today coming back from 0-2 down at half time to draw a hard-fought game 2-2 against Spring Hills.

Another fantastic game again from our new recruit Cate who we threw forward after half time and who made the coach look like a genius by scoring a goal after a great run and pass from Mia who responded well to a pep-talk from the side line and kicked into overdrive and gave us 10 minutes of fast and furious football. Was great to see the fighting qualities in a few of girls really emerge today. Charli played on courageously with an injury and was invaluable in midfield and defence as was Grace who I put at right back after half time in order to throw Elwen and Cate forward. Another great game with heaps of running and tackling from Elwen and another good goal. Lucy C also won some good balls and better still layed off some good passes today. Honor was excellent at centre-back in the second half and Chiara did a great job in her first time as goalie. Proud of the effort from all the girls today. Anabelle and Milla also did good work as sweepers. It was really only a couple of defensive lapses resulting from a bit of confusion about who should be where that resulted in the other team's goals.

See you all Thursday - whoever can make it.

Under 11 Kangas

This week we hosted Gisborne and its clear that the girls are all putting more thought into the way they play the game.  There was some great passing and running and with Maria's new iphone app we learnt that we had most of the play in the first half.  By the game end our shots on goal were 27  and 2 for Gisborne which was really the tale of the day.  Thanks to Merina for stepping up as goalie in the second half as we had a late withdrawal through illness.

Congrats to all the girls for another hard fought win.

Under 12s

Early Sunday morning, way too early for my liking, the U12 Joeys sitting in second position on the ladder faced the third placed team Ashburton United Gold in what can be described as a bruising affair. Actual tears were flowing on regular intervals from the girls on both sides of the field. Our girls to their credit did not take a step back and served it up to them. The final result was a convincing 4 nil victory to the Joeys. The first half of the game was a total domination by the Joeys with the majority of the game being played in Ashburton’s defensive third. The first goal came early with some crisp passing on the left wing resulting with Delali cutting in from wide on the wing and putting in a precise low centering cross to Isabella E who calmly controlled it and expertly side footed the ball passed the keeper from the 16 yard line. The second and third goals were both scored by Delali through some continuous team pressure. The second goal was a simple tap in following a shot by Hollie which was partially saved the keeper and third came from a intercepted goal kick. The last goal was scored by Alicia who doggedly chased, harassed from well outside the box and eventually bundled the ball over the line. To me this goal even though it looked scrappy was a thing of beauty due to the persistence and determination Alicia displayed. The second half of the game was a more even affair. The attacking defensive pressure normally attributed to Jades hard running went missing as she was forced to watch from the sidelines in the second half with an injury. The Joeys had a debatable penalty awarded against them as Kristina used her strength and bodied a girl over in the box. The resulting penalty kick went wide which maintained the clan sheet. It just confirmed how strongly the entire defence performed. Great team display girls. Special mention must be given to Hannah and Eloise for the solid performances as goal keepers. Keep it up Girls.

Under 14Bs

U14B hosted Northcote at home this week. We defended well and had a couple of shots on goal in the first half, but a penalty kick put us 1-0 down just before half-time. We started the 2nd half with positivity but after a couple of goals in quick succession to Northcote in the last 15 minutes, it was difficult to keep our heads up. We'll continue to aim to play both halves with consistency in effort and concentration regardless of whether we're up or down on the scoreboard, not an easy feat but we still have half a season to work on it!
