Perfect autumn day for Round 5

Under 9 Gold

On a glorious autumn morning the sun was shining on the Gold team. They played with purpose and energy against visitors Collingwood in a terrific end to end game.  The girls began with 3 in defence and Saraya in goal and they needed to be on their guard as the Collingwood girls played some neat passes to bring the ball close to our goal. But when the ball was cleared we had lots of options of our own.

Ruby P was running beautifully with the ball and Kitty Rose was winning the ball with some timely tackles.  It was from one of these runs that Ruby P scored her first goal. Two more followed in the first half while the black and white opposition managed one.  Pearl, Ednah and Miki were in top form. They stayed in position, followed the play and cleared the ball from defence even when under pressure. Ruby S and Rosie kept close tabs on the Collingwood players in midfield and showed their determination by chasing the ball and tackling all over the pitch. At half time the energy and excitement was obvious, and the oranges tasted sweet!

Miki took over in goal at the start of the second half and Saraya was full of energy and ran all over the pitch chasing the ball and tackling well. The ‘Wood girls tried hard to get back into the game and had corners and a number of good attempts on our goal. Miki was in fine form and saved everything that was thrown at her. Miki swapped with Rosie for the last 10 minutes who was able to keep a clean sheet. At the other end it was great to see Ruby P knock in another goal. Ruby S got her name on the score sheet with a lovely shot that sealed the game for the Gold team.

Under 11 Gold

Goal scorers: Dusty (1) and Miranda (1)

A beautiful weather day for May!  Our gold girls had a great start in the first half, the Midfield was tightly packed but Sofia controlled the ball well.  Unfortunately with the ball spending most of its time in our defensive half the Jets jumped in and scored their first goal at the fifteen minute mark. Miranda did a great job as goalie stopping further attempts made by the Jets and Alice was strong in our defence.  Well done girls.  Our gold team worked hard to score in the first half with no luck but plenty of perseverance, Jenna used her body well in midfield blocking opposition players and Holly had a few attempts on goals.

2nd half with the girls well and truly warmed up, Sofia threw high and long from the side line and it connected with Miranda who ran with it the rest of the way to score our first goal, good job Miranda.  Some extremely excited parents also enjoyed the moment!  Jets defence was playing a high line which allowed our smallest player Dusty to run forward with the ball half way up the field without opponent to score a sensational second goal.

Towards the end of the second half the girls became a little frazzled and lost formation which led to the Jets scoring twice more, with a 4-2 finish.  Although we lost today the girls can be proud of their effort and as a new team are improving each week.

Under 12s

A great result today, but more importantly the way we played showed enormous improvement from the start of the season! Well that's enough from me, now for our guest match reporters.

Today was a huge improvement for all the players and the team. There was a lot of things that we did well including really good passes back, forwards and to the side, we also did very well at staying in position, having great shots at goal and also really good throw ins which were quickly done and down the line. Congratulations to Charli for scoring a hat trick and also to Phoebe (who had a fantastic first game and first goal) and our other scorers Mia, Grace and Elena. When our teammates were cornered by opposition numbers someone was always there to pass to forwards and backwards. Great runs by everyone down the line towards goal and also using the skills we have been practising. There were also a lot of people going for second and third efforts if they didn't get the ball first. Everyone today at least tried a different or unusual position - we all had a try and all did very well. Thank you to Helina and Annabelle for being goalies, especially Annabelle who saved us all from being goalie.

A very good summary by our anonymous guest reporters who may have scored a goal each today!

Back to the coach. A huge thank you to Annabelle for offering to be goalie, congratulations to Phoebe for her first game and scoring our first goal. The defence played well today especially our positioning, making attacking a difficult job for the Zebras. Our positioning ensured everyone contributed to the defence, this also meant when we won the ball there was always a pass available for the player with the ball.

Today the ball did the work, a phrase I know the girls are sick of me saying but on a big pitch it's important to ensure you don't get too exhausted! If the ball does the work then you are working as a team which makes the game easier and a lot more fun!

The last 10 minutes had many players switching positions: Thea centre midfield but playing striker! Hazel right back, Tarni in defence (most of the game), Maggie in centre midfield, Sofia up forward (later admitting defence is more fun!), Lucy at left back playing many passes in the second half to a teammate in a better position. This is very important for all their development. Already this year two or three girls have excelled in positions not thought to be their favourite (in their eyes)!!

Special award this week to Sofia for her trick combination in the first half - a header, followed by a karate kick not once but twice. Not sure how we teach that, maybe a question for her parents? The reason for the award is that Sofia ensured the ball stayed in front of her the entire time, always moving forward and attacking the ball.

Under 14 Blue

Where to begin. The weather. What a pearler of a day Melbourne provided yesterday. And what a pearler of a performance the girls put on.

In my assessment we dominated the entire game and it was the best team game I have seen the girl play. We passed, we pressured, we ran hard and worked hard for each other all game. The final score line of 6-1 flattered the opposition. If it were not for their keeper it could have been many more.

In attack we had new goal scorer for the year. Rozie worked tirelessly all game and popped up in the first half to net both her goals. Ishi scored one early at the start of both halves and Ari ran hard all game and finished off strong with two late goals. Kristine after starting as keeper in the first half was unlucky not to hit the scoreboard in the second half as she tackled hard in the role of striker.

Kicking with a strong breeze at our back in the first half we were comfortably controlling the game piling on pressure with constant waves of attacks. Up 3 nil and just prior to half time on one of the rare attacks by the opposition we were unlucky to cop a goal. I was slightly concerned at this stage as I thought the wind would help the opposition in the second half. I gave Imogen a task to man mark one of their players in the second half and she did not disappoint. She did a terrific job. All in all the entire team did a fantastic job, we piled on 3 more goals in the second half and I cannot recall an attack the opposition had in the second half. So the defence and midfield were solid all game and did not allow the opposition to play.

It was a great team performance. Everyone played their part in the season best performance. Another highlight of the day was at the end of the game as the girls walked towards the sidelines the applause and encouragement that came from the parents, friends and supporters on the sidelines.
