On Saturday we travelled to Macquarie Uni for our first trial game of the season. Our aim was simple – get our hands on the footy, take some hits to get our bodies hardened for the season, get a realisation of where our fitness is at and start implementing the game plan that I want the boys to adapt this season.
I believe we met all of these aims and then some. The coaching staff were very impressed with the boys attack on the footy and their willingness to follow the requests asked of them in our game plan.
With only 22 players to rotate through, we knew that the second half would test the boys fitness levels but I didn’t mind this at all as it will put them in good stead for Rd 1.
I thought Rumps was strong and consistent at Full Back, Hugh Wells and Josh Misfud continually found the footy and used it well, Nathan Higgins returned after a year off and showed us that he will be a great asset and the McLean brothers got some valuable match practise. A couple of the juniors stepped up and contributed well and some boys that were new to the game got a feel of what it is all about. Special mention to Jono for slotting his first goal in his first game of AFL footy.
All in all, 1 trial down with 2 to come. We travel to Port Macquarie this weekend with hopefully some greater numbers to rotate through and then our most important trial the week after will be our Intra Club where match ups will determine who plays Rd 1.
