Up in Maitland, the First Division side took the field without a few key players, however they were able to secure some enthusiastic additions, including some Under 17 players. The side was a little depleted due to some injuries and unavailabilities. Consequently, it was a huge task to take on Maitland, who have proven themselves to be a genuine a premiership contender.
The Bombers battled hard all day and were again very competitive for most of the game. There were a few veterans who guided the younger players around the field. The group were superbly led by Anthony King, Rod Fiene, Mick Forster and Murray Schubert.
Eventually the Bombers went down 10.8.68 to 7.6.48 with Fiene, Forster, Schubert, Cartwright, Strappa and McRobbie best for the day.
The Premier Division side made the trek north to Warners Bay, keen to get back on the winners list after a last-start loss to Newcastle City.
The side welcomed boom recruit Jackson ‘Quads’ Ireland and veteran Corey ‘fingers’ Shackleton for their first games for 2014 and gee did they make a difference to the team!
From the 1st bounce the Bombers dominated the contest with Deitz, Mifsud, White and Ireland dominating through the middle, while Maxy Mumford and Michael Besley were strong in the ruck.
The group were stung after last round's loss to Newcastle City and wanted to send a message to the competition that they are capable of a much better performance.
The Bombers opened up a 5 goal lead by quarter time and extended this to 11 goals by half time. Scott Manualle and Dane Amidy were proving a handful for the Warners Bay defence. With Shaun Sinclair, Rob Zahra and Corbin Bond continuing their great form, Warners Bay only managed a single goal in the second half, while the Bombers amassed another 12 goals to run out 26.12.168 to 4.5.29 winners.
Jackson Ireland finished with 5 goals in a fantastic running midfield display, while Scott Manuelle continued his great start to the season by also kicking 5. The 'old wily fox' Dane Amidy proved that he has plenty left in him by bagging 4.
The bombers put in a great team performance and the voting was difficult as a number of players were unlucky not to be named amongst the best.
