Reminder Concussion Rule

Games are not to commence unless there is a Minimum Level 1 trainer in attendance….

The junior league will not tolerate trainers going outside of these guidelines.  League Safe Trainers cannot assess a player, this must be done by a Level 1 trainer or higher.  League Safe is to deliver water and messages and call for assistance for an injury, which includes concussion.  Any trainer found to be in breach of this will be subject to penalty and a review of their suitability to retain the qualification.

Symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • "seeing stars" and feeling dazed, dizzy, or lightheaded
  • memory loss, such as trouble remembering things that happened right before and after the injury
  • nausea or vomiting
  • headaches
  • blurred vision and sensitivity to light
  • slurred speech or saying things that don't make sense
  • difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions
  • difficulty with coordination or balance (such as being unable to catch a ball or other easy tasks
  • feeling anxious or irritable for no apparent reason
  • feeling overly tired

Please ensure this information is distributed to your trainers (and other officials).  It would also be a good idea to advise your players and parents that any person who exhibits signs of concussion will be removed from the field and will not be allowed to take any further part in the game until a clearance from a medical practitioner has been received.  The decision of whether a player stays on the field or goes back on the field does not lay with the coach…..a Sports Trainer is the only one who can rule of this.  Err on the side of caution…..this is a game and none of us want to see a player with a brain injury because we didn’t manage it properly at the time.

Keep in mind, the NRL has stringent Concussion Policies which have also been implemented at NSWRL competition levels such as NSW Cup.  The junior league does not have a doctor in attendance so it is important that our trainers work within our qualifications.  Leaflets on Concussion were distributed to all clubs – ensure your trainers have these available.

Comment Guidelines: The SportingPulse Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
