On Sunday, we faced a Heidelberg team who we knew would be more competitive
than our last meeting in round 6, and that is how it turned out to be.
After captain Jamie won the toss and wisely chose to kick to the wind
assisted far end, we started well before giving up a couple of goals due to
loose play down back. Against the wind in the 2nd quarter, we teamed up much
better and took a comfortable lead into half time.
As has been the case over the past few weeks we were able to apply pressure
in the third quarter and led by 8 goals at three quarter time. Heidelberg
fought back strongly in the final quarter kicking 5 goals to our 2 but a 5
goal victory was well earned and secured us a spot in the finals for the
first time ever.
JJJ was superb at centre half forward presenting well and rewarded with four
goals, supported by Oliver with 3. Biggsy was, as always fantastic in the
way he won the ball and then distributed it to our advantage. Nelson played
three excellent quarters and was rewarded with the Heidelberg coaches award.
It was terrific to finally welcome back Christian from a long injury lay off
and watch him run riot inside 50 during the last quarter.
Highlights for me were Lachan Spencer’s strong marking contest in the last
quarter, Jamie throwing himself into a contest like never before and Liam
slotting the ball through from deep in the forward pocket.
A tough contest awaits this week with Parkside aiming to avenge a close last
minute 2 point loss they suffered earlier in the season. We are well placed
to finish the season strongly by maintaining the values that we have lived
by in the past 4-5 weeks.
