Coach Profile

Stephen Breheny

Steve Breheny joins the Adelaide Lightning for the 2010/11 season. He has built a reputation for being one of Australia's most respected coaches and looks to bring that experience to immediately lift the lightning to a title contender.

It starts with his impressive playing credentials, which include the 1980 Moscow Olympics, 1982 world championship, NBL titles with St. Kilda in 1979-80 and the captaincy in that second season.

Breheny has been involved with women’s basketball for over 20 years, which began with his first coaching role with Coburg, taking them all the way to the Australian Club Championship in 1987-88 and the WNBL Grand Final.

He then went on to lead Canberra into the NBL grand final before taking up the head coach role at Geelong. He saw successful assistant coaching periods with North Melbourne (1994 championship season) and Adelaide (1998-99-02 championships).

Breheny will continue on as CEO in addition to the coaching role and spend the WNBL off-season coaching the Eastern Mavericks in the state league.
