WheelKings postpone June 6 game against Razorbacks

A disappointing decision has had to be made to postpone this Saturday's game against the Sydney Razorbacks which was scheduled for 3pm at Auburn Basketball Centre.

An unfortunate clash between the NWBL draw and an Australian u/23s camp in Canberra starting tomorrow has left the WheelKings unable to field 5 players that collectively fit under the maximum of 14 classification points on court. The Wheelkings only recently became aware of the clash which requires Bill Latham to be at the camp. Bill plays in the NWBL as a 3.0 pointer and is integral to Wenty's 14 point combinations.

The WheelKings usually have flexibility in their line-ups and Bill's absence wouldn't be such a big issue except that WheelKings 1.0 pointer Jeremy Doyle suffered an injury a few days ago that has left him unable to play this weekend. An added difficulty in putting together a team under 14 points is that the WheelKings had already released their 3 young rookies to play for the NSW Juniors at the Queensland Classic tournament in Brisbane this weekend. With 3.5 player Gaetano Bagnato also away, Wenty would be left with just 6 players and a lowest combination of 14.5 points.

Initially, the WheelKings had wanted to hold Bill out of the camp, however, because he's been playing in Europe the last 8 months, he's had no training with the u/23s and hasn't even met a number of his teammates. As this is the last camp before the team heads to the World Championships in Paris on June 28, everyone has agreed that it is crucial that Bill be at the camp.

The decision to postpone the game was made late last night after lengthy consultations between the WheelKings committee, the Razorbacks, u/23s coach Mark Walker, the NWBL Executive and Basketball Australia. The Razorbacks agreed to the postponement late this afternoon. No decision has yet been made on when or where the game will be played but it is expected to be rescheduled to a mid-week date towards the end of the season.

Sunday's second match of the weekend against the Razorbacks will go ahead as scheduled - 12 noon at Bankstown Basketball Stadium - as requested by the Razorbacks and accepted by the WheelKings. Wenty is in the process of contacting past players to make up a team that fits the 14 point limit.
