VIDEO: Palau's London 2012 Olympic Journey

Over 200 years ago a link was formed between the Pacific nation, Palau and England thanks to Captain Wilson and Prince Lee Boo. This link was created when the Antelope crashed and the crew, including Captain Wilson, were shipwrecked on one of the islands of Palau. After being given refuge on Palau thanks to the High Chief Ibedul, as a thank you Captain Wilson took Prince Lee Boo back to England.

Unfortunately within six months Prince Lee Boo contracted small pox and died, he is buried at St Mary's Church Rotherhithe. The Olympic team Palau visited the tomb of Prince Lee Boo where they reflected on their Olympic Journey and the legacy they will leave behind.more

Oceania’s latest Olympians take to the track.

The eyes of the Pacific Islands were drawn to the Olympic Stadium as 9 Oceania athletes took to the track for the men’s 100m preliminary rounds. Athletes from Tonga, Palau, Tuvalu, The Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, American Samoa, The Solomon Islands, Kiribati and The Cook Islands all took part in the 4 heats.more

Palaun Rodman runs to New Heights

Today was the turn of the men’s 100m sprint at London 2012 Olympics. The start of day eight looked dull with black clouds over the stadium, however just before Palauan sprinter, Rodman Teltull, took his place in heat 2 the sun made a glorious appearance. This created great conditions for the 100m sprint in which Rodman would be racing against other athletes from around the world including Liaqat Amore

The atmosphere of a full house helped spur on all the athletes on as they took up their positions on the starting blocks for the heats of the women’s 100m.

Palau’s Rubie Joy Gabriel, took up her place in lane 4 in heat 3. The silence as the starter spoke must have been daunting for the second youngest athlete in the race, a moment when the athletes have to concentrate and contain their excitement and nerves. A challenge faced through a combination of prayer and quiet time.more

Judo Jen Takes to the Floor

Judo was first introduced to the Olympics in the 1964 Tokyo Games, initially with the men’s event and later the women’s in 1992. Judo is based on Jujitsu, with each contest lasting five minutes in which athletes attempt to make a range of throws and holds to gain points, with the winner scoring the most points, who will then advance on to the next stage.more

Patris Doing Palau Proud

Stevick Patris was applauded as he stepped forward out of the line up, whilst his name and country were called, alongside his fellow 62kg group B weightlifters from around the world including Tuvalu and India. After walking from the backstage area to the tension creating music, while applause trembled through the audience and the stamping of feet made the floor shake. Stevick then took his place on the 4m by 4m platform, looking down at the weight. The audience then went silent while Stevick took up his position ready to lift the 101Kg weight before him; bending down and placing his hands on the weight he took a deep breath ready to start.more

Palau’s Red Carpet Entrance

The start of Palau’s London 2012 journey officially began on Monday with the team’s welcome meeting, held in the Main Plaza of the Athletes Village. Members of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, dressed as court jesters helped to welcome the athletes when they started the event with their cover of ‘bicycle’, by the iconic English band Queen, whilst riding bikes, creating spectacular entertainment. The glorious sunshine lit up the whole event, complementing the brightly coloured clothing that the court jesters were wearing.more

The Warmest of Welcomes

After arriving in the Athletes Village, the Palau, Vanuatu and American Samoan athletes were given a warm welcome to the London 2012 Olympics with a theatrical performance by members of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. The performers entered the main plaza energetically to their rendition of ‘Bicycle’ by Queen, ringing hand bells whilst cycling around the athletes and gathering them together. The atmosphere was further enhanced by the glorious heat and cloudless blue skies, making the Oceania athletes feel slightly more at home after the previous few months of dreary weather at the British training camps. The radiant sunshine matched the vibrant colours of the jester-like outfits of the performers, as their dances hailed the athletes before they raised each nation’s flag.more

Olympic Youth Camp Set for March 15th at Palau Gym

Palau Athletes and Olympians Commission with members of Palau NOC programs met with Sports Youth Ambassadors representing different sports in Palau to discuss and facilitate the proposed program and activities for the one day Olympic Youth Camp set for March 15th Youth Day.   As part of the core objective of the Palau Athletes and Olympians Commission, representing the voices and concerns of Athletes, The Camp – title Olympic Youth - will target young athletes between 10-18years of age who are active in their sport program, particularly young athletes, officials, sports administrators and young volunteers.

The Camp will focus on young athletes that are participating and training in the various programs offered to them through sports members recognized by the Palau NOC. The Theme will focus on the Olympic Values: Respect, Friendship and Excellence. From these values the idea is to educate and inspire these young people to further understand the following Subject matters related to their sports participation as well as their overall development: The Olympic Values Integration to our Society and Culture (Social Responsibilities) , Anti Doping and Sports, Nutrition, Education Pathway through Sports and Career, Sports For All – Youth Games, Stop HIV Program, and Voices of Athletes.  CAMP REGISTRATION FORM AVAILABLE GO TO "Publications and Reports" Section.

7 September - BRONZE FOR PALAU BASEBALL

Playing at their best today, Team Palau Baseball played their game against CNMI and took the Bronze Medal (8-0). CNMI and Guam will play for Gold and Silver Tomorrow.

The Palau Athletics Team competed in the 200m and 400m sprints. Ruby Joy Gabriel clocked 29.02 in the 200m women and Rodman Teltull clocked 23.22 while John Stills clocked 23.45. in the men’s 200m event. In the event of Weightlifting, our Palau lifter Maverick Faustino competed today in his weight class of 94kg where he snatched 95kg, clean & jerk 120 total of 215 in his event, ranking 5th place.

6th September Team HIghlight at the 2011 Games

The day kicked off with Weightlifter Dmitri Villanueva’s event, where he snatched 93kg and did a max personal best of clean & jerk at a 110kg. Dmitri did his max in the event with total weight of 203 where he ranked 6th in his weight class.

Stevick Patris WIN for Palau at Pacific Games 2011

In his first event of the day today, Sept 5, 2011,  and the final event, the top male athlete Weightlifter Stevick Patris achieved Team Palau the first Silver and two Bronze in his 62kg Weightclass.  Congratulations to Stevick.  Stevick is in the same class as Manuel from FSM Team.  The two remaining lifters Dmitri and Maverick will be lifting tomorrow and wednesday in their respective weightclass.  (photo: Stevick showing his medals with members of Team Palau coaches and managers)

Team Palau Update last week of Pacific Games

Team Palau 2011 in Noumea are doing okay with the last week of the games left. The rest of the teams are starting all their events today 5th September with Beach Volleyball kicking off the day with the Men’s Beach Volleyball against CNMI team all the way to three sets and CNMI taking away the last set with scores of CNMI 15 and Palau 11. The first set won by CNMI 21 and Palau 16 and 2nd set taken by Palau 21 and CNMI 18. The Women Beach volleyball played their first game with Tahiti with only two sets to Tahiti (1st set Tahiti 21 and Palau 8 and 2nd set Tahiti 21 and Palau 9).

John Tarkong, Jr. recipient of IOC Award 2010

As a tradition for 10 years at the PNOC Sports Award Banquet and as part of the IOC NOC program, Mr. John Tarkong, an Olympian and now coach for Palau national wrestling program was the recipient for the IOC 2010 Trophy, entitled :  Sports - Inspiring young People.  Mr. Tarkong was selected among the top sports people in Palau.  He was presented this award for his commitment to many young wrestlers who he has brought to the programat very young ages and has provided mentorship, guidance and even open his home to many wrestlers in the past years and continue to do today.  Mr. Tarkong is an active athlete, coach and a strong advocate of sports programs in Palau and represents Palau in FILA as the President of Oceania Wrestling.  Congratulations Mr. Tarkong.

PNOC Sports Award Banquet

The Palau National Olympic Committee and national sports federations celebrated with Sportspeople at the 10th Annual Sports Banquet on the 9th of April - PNOC Day.  The event was held at Ngarachemayong Cultural Center.   The event recognized sports athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, partners and supporters for the program of 2010 and beyond.  The evening highlighted many youth athletes.  The Palau NOC was very fortunate to have the ONOC Secretary General, Rick Blas, attend and was a guest speaker at this NOC Annual Function.  The Female Athlete of the Year 2010 was awarded to Ayana Rengiil of Palau Tennis Federation and Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to Olai Kumangai of Palau Triathlon Federation.

Palau NOC attends the 17th General Assembly of ANOC

The 17th General Assembly of the Association of the National Olympic Committees was held on October 20-23rd in Acapulco, Mexico.
Baklai Temengil, Secretary General for Palau NOC was the delegate to the general assembly. The General Assembly hosted all the 205 National Olympic Committees and the agenda discussions were on Reports on Olympic Movement, including the 1st Olympic Sports Convention.more

Team Palau Arrives in Singapore

Team Palau arrives safely in Singapore and is now settled in at the Games Village. Team Palau departed on Wednesday, 11 August 2010, to Singapore via Manila, Philippines. After spending one night in Manila they continued on to Singapore to take part in the First Youth Olympic Games.more

Secretary General Meeting and MOSO in Fiji

The Oceania National Olympic Committee Secretary General's met in Suva Fiji to discuss on the priorities and funding allocations for Oceania sports for the next Olympiad 2009-2012. Baklai Temengil, Secretary General from Palau participated in this forum. In addition, a pilot project for the Oceania Sport Education Program was launched were 13 countries from Oceania are participating in an educational program called MOSO - Managing Olympic Sports Organizations of Oceania. The MOSO is a pathway for other education programs at an Oceania level to MEMOS an IOC initiative education program.
