Similar to the AFL this year, the Western Region Football League is holding three Anzac Day matches- Sunshine v Werribee Districts, Albion v Deer Park and Braybrook v Albanvale.
An honour once reserved for the select few, today it’s fantastic to see six clubs experience Anzac Day football, with many clubs getting behind the spirit of the day, holding a number of services before their respective seniors match.
Yet while some teams miss out on the privilege of playing on Anzac Day this year, others will still honour our diggers on Saturday with a special Anzac Day service to be held at the St Albans v Spotswood and Caroline Springs v North Footscray matches.
Before the St.Albans v Spotswood senior match, players will be lining up in front of a flag pole and a wreath will be laid by Bob Mattewman (Caroline Springs RSL Vice President and Vietnam Veteran) and Terry Murnane (Werribee RSL member and Vietnam Veteran).
At Town Centre Oval, Caroline Springs will host an Anzac Day ceremony which will take place at 2:05pm where the Ode will be recited by WO Clinton Hall, last post and a minute silence observed.
Wreaths will be laid and the national anthem will be played before the coin will be tossed by Vietnam Veteran Peter Ward. So if you can’t make it to any of the three Anzac Day games on Friday, ensure you get to one of the above games on Saturday and pay your respects to our Anzacs.
