The Newport Power Junior Football Club will have something extra to celebrate this weekend as it prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary in the Western Region Football League.
Since its inaugural year in 2005, the development and progress of Newport Power has been extensive, with the club now filling nine junior sides ranging from Under 9s all the way to Under18s.
One man who has been there through it all is Club President Stephen Martyn who has been a great influence on the club’s re-development in 2005 and has been a leading member with its growth in participation levels. Throughout his time with Newport Power, Martyn has also introduced a number of major sponsors which have helped drive the club to where it is today.
To celebrate its milestone, the club is set to host a ‘Fancy Dinner Dance’ on Saturday May 2 at the Substation in Newport. The event is not only a chance to unite its members both past and present, but also recognizes all that the club has accomplished throughout the last 10 years.
While Newport Power has seen some major changes off-the-field over the past decade, it is proud to have had some on-the-field success.
In the short time the club has been in existence, they have produced two premiership flags (2013, U16C and U14C), four junior WRFL Best and Fairest players and most recently had a league Leading Goal Kicking award presented to 2014 Division Two Under 18 player Youself El Hawli for booting a competition high 78 goals.
The club is also proud to have Under 16 player James Martyn selected in the Brad Johnson Squad which will play two games in the Victorian U16 Championships against other regions over the June school holidays. James is the first junior player from Newport to advance in their football career and be a step closer to playing in the AFL.
In its milestone year, the Power continues to thrive in the WRFL with a number of its teams already chalking up a win or two this season as they enjoy pulling on the boots each weekend.
The Newport Power Junior Football Club should be proud of its accomplishments over the past 10 years as it hopes to further progress and continue to expand. The Western Region Football League would like to congratulate the club and is members on all its successes and wish them all the best for the future.
