Unakea has been a keen and avid sportsman all his life more particularly in rugby whilst attached to his home club-team Tupapa/Maraerenga for a number of years. His rugby carreer could only be classified as a total success stemming from notable achievements and performances as a senior grade player from 1964 - 1987, and later taking charge and control of the leadership and administrative responsibilities of the club both in the codes of Rugby Union and Rugby Leaque as either Secretary and President during the ensuing years. Unakea was also involved with sports administration at the National level, being treasurer of the Cook Islands Sports Association from 1986-87. He was a former secretary of the Cook Islands Weghtlifting Association, and in 1988, he was selected as the Manager of the Cook Islands Weghtlifting team to the Seoul Olympics Games.
