BRONCOS CHAMPING AT THE BIT

With the 2013 Big V Basketball competition tip off only a couple of weeks away, the Hume City Broncos Championship Mens and Womens teams can’t wait to show off the fruits of a long and demanding pre-season preparation. They start this coming Labour Day weekend with a series of practice matches at Frankston before heading into Round One on Saturday 16 March.

New faces for the mens team include point guards Eric Miraflores (ex Craigieburn) and Mweemba Maluma (ex Eltham) and forwards Elliot Carr (ex Coburg) and Harun (Harry) Kansuk (ex Diamond Valley, returning Broadmeadows junior). JB, Jermaine Maybank, Shaun Prendergast and Alex Bogart King provide the anchors for the squad, with Matthew Johnson being promoted from the Club’s Youth League team.

The Lady Broncos build on the promise of a competitive 2012 season by complimenting returning successful Head Coach Warren Taylor with seasoned and talented playing Assistants in Sharin Milner and Katrina Hibbert, who will guide and mentor an up and coming group of youngsters. Athletic forwards Tarryn MacPherson (Chadron State College) and Yinka Olorunnife (University of Idaho, returning Broadmeadows Junior) will control the paint alongside returnee Viv Saad, while Jacinta Scott (ex Ringwood), Sarah and Gemma Wright and Tatjana Stevanovic complete the roster at this stage.

General Manager Terri Sutton said there is a real buzz of anticipation in both the mens and womens programs. “With the talent we’ve been able to add, and the stability and familiarity of our coaching staff, Hume City basketball is well placed to make a real push into the upper brackets of the Big V competition and our supporters are looking forward to the progression of our juniors through the Youth development systems. There are exciting times ahead for our local community and we will be strongly promoting the Big V brand as we showcase our participation in elite level State basketball.”

The Dimboola Road Stadium will host a double header Youth fixture on Saturday 16 March at 6 pm (Women v Eltham) and 8 pm (Men v Bendigo) and will back up on the Sunday with a 1 pm Womens Championship game against the visiting Bulleen Boomers. The Championship Men and Women both play away against Sherbrooke on Saturday 16 March.
