The Lexton Plains FLNA wishes to advise that Round 1 of the 2010 Lexton Plains FLNA Fixtures has been dedicated as “Umpire Appreciation Round”.
In line with the AFL dedicating their Round 4 fixtures to the same theme, the Lexton Plains FLNA have decided to support this important initiative and considered that Round 1 was the most appropriate round to hold this dedication as we hope it does set an appropriate message for the season ahead.
As part of the Round’s activities, all Lexton Plains FLNA Senior Coaches will shake hands with umpires before each game in Round 1, and continue to do so before each game during the 2010 season. Coaches, who previously met umpires in the rooms before matches, will exchange pleasantries on the ground in a league bid to "create more positive match-day environments".
In announcing the AFL initiative, the AFL Coaches' Association chief executive Danny Frawley said the coaches were united in their desire to do something that had a positive impact on all levels of the game.
"AFL coaches are aware of their responsibility in setting the example for coaches at community level, and can also influence players, supporters, parents and administrators to provide a positive match-day environment for all participants, including umpires," Frawley said.
"We believe all coaches need to lead the way in treating umpires with respect and should endeavor to build good relationships with their local umpires. It is worth noting that the handshake idea was suggested by Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.”
The Lexton Plains FLNA totally supports the AFL initiative, and is delighted to be carrying out the same program in 2010.
