During the 2014 season, the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football & Netball League formed a Working Party to review the MCDFNL Junior Football competition structure, and to make recommendations on how the competition should be best structured from 2015 to ensure the long term health and viability of MCDFNL clubs. This was a great opportunity for the League and clubs to work together on an area that consistently throws up challenges for our game and the clubs concerned.
The MCDFNL established this Working Party after consulting with all 14 MCDFNL clubs and the League Executive over the course of the 2014 season.
Through regular meetings and extensive research with clubs, who all completed a thorough junior operational survey, AFL Victoria and external parties, the Working Party recommended to the MCDFNL Executive that the following age groups be implemented for the MCDFNL junior football competition for the 2015 season and beyond
- Under 11.5
- Under 14.5
- Under 17.5
This was ratified by the MCDFNL Executive and presented at a meeting of MCDFNL club presidents and secretaries on Wednesday 27th August 2014.
In addition to the above, the MCDFNL will also continue to support an “unofficial” Minis/Under 10 competition that would be played on a Friday night or as a part of match days in 2015, as has occurred successfully in the past.
MCDFNL President Stephen Broad believes that these changes will help foster growth of the MCDFNL junior competition.
“The League is excited with the potential growth in participation in our junior competition in 2015, and we are confident that “history” will show these changes to be for the benefit of our clubs and the MCDFNL junior competition”, Broad commented.
The MCDFNL will work with all clubs over the coming months to ensure that all clubs have a healthy and viable junior structure in preparation for the 2015 season.
