MALDON v NEWSTEAD - Newstead continue on their winning way
Newstead held onto top spot on the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League ladder when it outplayed Maldon in very wet conditions at the Bill Woodful Reserve on Saturday.
Three inches of rain on Friday night saw the game played in very wet and slippery conditions, which suited the bullocking work of Newstead’s Nathan Webster.
The nuggetty onballer was in and under at every opportunity and was easily best afield as he continually got the ball out to his team mates to set up the win for the undefeated Steaders.
Newstead opened with the first three goals of the game through Tom Reece, Daniel Christmas and Michael Checkley, but it was hard work with a slippery Sherrin, making ball handling was difficult for both teams. Maldon fought back with two goals late in the term but Newstead had the upper hand especially when Tom Reece marked a pass from David Wall and goaled after the siren to take a 13 point lead into the first change.
It was a seven goal second term for the Steaders that put the game out of reach of the Bombers who could not handle the pressure of the Newstead attack around the packs, even with star on-baller Sam Kerr leaving the game through injury at quarter time. David Wall and Ethan Ford were creating plenty of opportunities as the Steaders shared the goals amongst seven different players to lead by 46 points at half time.
The game was over at this point, but Maldon continued to fight against the odds, led by Hayden Kelly and Nick McKnight who were amongst Maldon’s better players for the day. It was hard work getting a kick in the third term as conditions were extremely slippery and it was Newstead’s Adam Hunter who was the only goal scorer for the term when David Wall handballed into the path of Hunter who goaled under pressure in the goal square.
It was one way traffic in the final term as the Steaders finshed off their good work with a five goal to one term with Ethan Ford creating plenty of scoring opportunites and kicking two final quarter goal s himself as Newstead again passed the 80 point winning margin that they have achieved in all of their games this season.
Final Scores: Newstead 18,13.121 to Maldon 5.8.38
Trentham v Avoca
A fantastic fightback by Trentham saw them fall just thirteen points short of an Avoca side with a recent dielection for final-quarter fadeouts after trailing by thirty-two points at three-quarter time.
The Saints jumped the Bulldogs in the opening term, and had they kicked truly they could have set up their first win of the season.
But after reorganizing themselves at the quarter time huddle, the Bulldogs took control of the game in the second term with seven goals to lead at half time by 20 points.
Alec Wiltshire and Jesse Britton were solid in defence for Avoca and set up many attacking moves of the half back line and the third term again favoured the Bulldogs as they pushed the margin out to 32 points at the final change. But the Bulldogs lack of fitness showed for the second game in succession, as they were again under pressure in the final term as the Saints finished strong, but the Bulldogs were able to withstand the challenge this time and held on to win by 13 points at the final siren.
James Wicker and Saints Coach Clayton Scoble were very good for the Saints while Lachlan Edwards, Jay Farnsworth, Wiltshire and Britton were the dominant contributors for the Bulldogs.
Avoca won 15.10.100 to 13.9.87
Lexton v Campbells Creek – Brown kicks 13 goals
A 13 goal haul by Lexton spearhead Matthew Brown has set up a 129 point drubbing of Campbells Creek at Lexton on Sunday.
The star forward was unstoppable as he finished with 13 goals three behinds and also unselfishly dished off a number of goals to his team mates.
The opening term was a struggle as Sam Noble was presenting well for Creek but they were not taking advantage of their opportunities and turned the ball over, while Lexton’s Damon Aspland, Jimmy Templeton and Paul Phillips were providing plenty of drive for the Tigers and Lachlan Prior and Matt Brown took advantage with early goals to set the pace for the day. The loss of playing coach Sean Smith to a calf muscle strain mid way through the second term did not help the cause for Creek as a nine goal quarter for the Tigers sealed the game at half time.
Lexton moved the ball well and kicked to space allowing Brown to have a free run at the ball, while Creek continued to turn the ball over, and Paul Phillips, Mick Jennings and Jordan Phelan ran the ball forward from the defensive half with ease. The Tigers had twelve individual goalkickers for the game and finished with a twelve goal final term.
Creek’s better players were Aaron Murray, Josh Adamson and Daniel Klemick, but they were no match for the team effort that Lexton produced as they won in all areas of the ground. Lexton 26.10.166 to Creek 5.7.37
Harcourt v Royal Park
Royal Park travelled to Harcourt confident of putting in a good show but Harcourt brought the Tigers back to earth with a strong showing from start to finish.
Jack Douglas was outstanding across half back for the Lions and Kyle McLean’s six goals showed that the Lions have another avenue to goal other than Matt Giri who had a good tussle with Royal Park defender Matthew Walker but still managed to kick four goals for the game, while Chris McLean also finished with four goals.
Royal Park’s Hamish Blake, Brendan Birch and Trent Pye tried hard all day but it was the Lions day as they ran out easy winners by 80 points.
Harcourt 19,14.128 to Royal Park 6.12.48
CARISBROOK vs NATTE BEALIBA - REDBACKS SLOG OUT WIN OVER SWANS
Carisbrook has continued its unbeaten run in the MCDFNL, with the Redbacks slogging out a 48 point win over Natte Bealiba in slipper conditions on Saturday.
In one of the Brook's toughest challenges to date, it took another five goal haul by key forward Nathan Wright to see off the spirited Swans on the Redbacks' home turf, while Nick Wright also slotted three majors for the winners in a 14.15 (99) to 7.9 (51) win.
In wet and slippery conditions, the game was reduced to a scrap, with the Redbacks' ability to spread and link up from stoppages the key to their victory, with star speedster Matt Bilton a shining light in the wet conditions.
Star Swans big man Lachlan Cameron looked like posing a threat to the Redbacks early on, slotting too early goals in his first game for the year before his injury woes continued, leaving the game with a hamstring strain, while Zac Perez (ankle) and Laurence Chadwick (ribs) also joined him on the bench.
Along with the two Wrights and Bilton, Travis Cornwill and Jay Anderson were the Redbacks' best, while veteran midfielder Brent Mortlock, key forward Mark Fitzgerald and Daniel Gifford were the Swans' best.
The win means the Redbacks join Newstead as the competition's only two unbeaten sides, setting up a tantalising showdown between the two in just a few weeks' time.
DUNOLLY vs ROVERS - MAGPIES WOES CONTINUE AS EAGLES SWOOP ON MUCH-NEEDED WIN
Maryborough Rovers' woes have continued, this time going down to Dunolly by 59 points on the Eagles home turf.
The winless Magpies' inability to find targets up forward again proved costly, going down 12.17 (89) to 4.6 (30), with Jeremy Laird slotting four majors for the winners.
If it weren't for the Eagles' inaccuracy, the pain could have been far worse for the Magpies, who are sitting in last place on the ladder and look in major trouble.
Lee Jackson, Grant Raven, Laird and Matt Gibbs were Dunolly's best, while Andrew Jardine, Trent Monk, Matt Batson and Frank Towers were shining lights in a dirty day for the Pies.
Rovers' major hope of scoring win now looks to hinge on their upcoming clash against the league's only other winless team in Trentham.
NAVARRE vs TALBOT - GRASSHOPPERS ROMP TO WIN
Navarre has scored an amazing 91-point win over Talbot in sloppy conditions, with the Hawks unable to boot a single goal for the entire match.
In a rarely seen scoreline at senior level, Navarre won 13.15 (93) to Talbot's 0.2 (2) on a dirty day out for the Hawks.
Navarre kicked away early with a five-goal opening term and never looked back, ruthlessly crushing the Hawks' hopes of an upset from the get-go, hammering home goals and completely locking down Talbot's scoring options to extend their winning streak to five games.
Matthew Whiteman, Trent Barras, Josh Sulllivan and Karl Gunther were the Hawks' best, while no player details were available for the victors
