NEWSTEAD v TALBOT - Hawks face tough challenge
Talbot will face a tough challenge against Newstead in Round nine action in the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League.
Newstead took all before them until successive defeats in the past two rounds against Navarre and Carisbrook will have dented the ego a bit and they will be out to regain some pride as they face Talbot who have been a big improver this season.
Talbot are coming off an exciting six point win over Royal Park and are currently sitting in 7th place on the ladder and will be confident of a good showing against the highly fancied Steaders who were missing quite a few players last week against Carisbrook.
Leading goalkicker Daniel Christmas was unavailable for Newstead last week and will be a welcome inclusion.
Matt Smith and Brandon McRedmond are in good form and will have to be at their best if the Hawks are to have any chance.
Despite Talbot’s improvement this season, Newstead should be too strong at home.

Maldon v Trentham
Trentham travel to the Bill Woodful Reserve to take on Maldon and the Saints Coach Clayton Scoble will be keen to have his boys back firing after a disappointing defeat at the hands of Natte Bealiba last week.
The Saints were outstanding against Rovers the week before, and they were brought back to earth last week as Natte dominated the game from start to finish.
Trentham is in a team building phase and the young players are very exciting to watch when they get their running game going. Lewis Bruton and Scott Witmitz have plenty of pace, while Scoble is very strong across half back and uses the ball well.
Maldon found it difficult to shake Dunolly last week and it was only in the final quarter that they were able to do so. Sitting in fifth position on the ladder and only one win ahead of four other teams, every game is a must win situation for the Bombers.
A good contest is expected but Maldon should be able to maintain their spot in the top five with a win at home.

Royal Park v Lexton
The battle of the Tigers will take place at Hedges Oval and it is expected that the Lexton Tigers will win the battle, but with the improvement of the Royal Park Tigers this season, a much closer battle is expected than in recent seasons.
Royal Park were unlucky not to get the points last week as they went down by a straight kick to Talbot last week as they stormed home with a very strong final quarter, but just failed to get their at the final siren.
Brendan Birch and Jarrad O’Connor have been amongst the best players on a consistent basis for Bushy and the recent inclusion of Tristan Maher and Zac Short have added some stability to the line up as the Bushy Tigers keep improving from week to week.
Lexton have too many good players at all levels with Damon Aspland having an outstanding season in the middle, Coach Paul Phillips and Mick Jennings are very reliable defenders while Matt Brown kicked another bag last week to be third on the goalkicking table.
Lexton should be too good on this occasion.

Avoca v Maryborough Rovers
Avoca are coming off a fighting win over Campbells Creek last week and will be hoping to take the form in which they finished that game into their match with Maryborough Rovers this week at the Avoca Public Park.
The Bulldogs have been struggling to finish off matches this season and when Campbells Creek drew level in the early stages of the final term, it looked like that was to be the case again, but the Bulldogs slipped into high gear and played the football that they are capable off and kicked the final seven goals of the game.
It is no secret that Rovers have been struck down with injury this season and face an uphill battle to down the Bulldogs this week. Trent Monk Andrew Jardine, Brent Ritchie and Matt Stiles have been consistent performers for Rovers and they will give their all for the Magpies as will Coach Scott Sellers who leads from the front each week.
However, the Bulldogs should be able to post another win to keep them in finals contention.

CARISBROOK vs CAMPBELLS CREEK – REDBACKS’ RUN SET TO CONTINUE
Carisbrook will be confident of extending its unbeaten run into the second half of the MCDFNL season as it takes on Campbells Creek in round nine this year.
The Redbacks are now the out-and-out premiership favourites, and deservedly so, particularly after their dominance of Newstead last weekend. Carisbrook has taken their game to a new level in 2013, even after the side clinched the 2012 flag. The addition of Matt Bilton has been a major boost for the Redbacks, while Nathan Wright has been unstoppable up forward so far, tied for top spot on the league goalkicking ladder with Daniel Christmas on 39 goals.
Campbells Creek has turned its home ground into something of a fortress this year, but the Magpies will be sorely tested against the Redbacks, particularly for defensive options in stopping Wright and the rest of the Redbacks’ scoring options.
Chris Stone has been in vintage form in recent weeks, but the Magpies will need to pull one out of the bag if they are to halt the Redbacks’ run.

HARCOURT vs DUNOLLY – LIONS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK
Harcourt will look to rebound from its demoralising loss at the hands of Navarre last week when the Lions host Dunolly this week.
Harcourt, which had been rated by many as the MCDFNL’s dark horse in season 2013, were on the wrong end of a blowout loss last week and will be keen to bounce back on Saturday against the Eagles, who have just one win to their name thus far.
The Lions have been competitive in all their fixtures so far this season apart from last round’s loss and will be confident of being able to overrun the Eagles, particularly given the form of small forward Matt Giri.
The Eagles continue to improve as season 2013 rolls on, but whether or not they have the quality to topple the Lions or not remains to be seen.

NAVARRE vs NATTE BEALIBA– SWANS FACE MASSIVE TEST
Natte Bealiba faces one of its toughest tasks yet when it comes up against a rampaging Navaree on Sunday.
While the Swans’ form has improved rapidly over the past few rounds, the Grasshoppers are currently the MCDFNL’s team to beat, having demolished Newstead and Harcourt in the past two rounds.
Adding to the Swans’ challenge is an injury cloud hanging over captain and key forward Mark Fitzgerald, who left the ground with a slight hamstring strain against Trentham last round. Small forward Ryan Weir was able to cover Fitzgerald’s absence last round, slotting nine goals, but he won’t find things as easy this week and will likely attract the attention of one of Navarre’s best backmen.
The Swans’ backmen will also have their work cut out in attempting to keep wraps on Navarre’s forwards, who have dominated opposition defenders this year, with Zane Bigmore, Kris Brennan and Ben Scott all presenting well up forward for the Grasshoppers.
If the Swans can pull off a victory over the highly-rated Hoppers, it would be a major boost to their finals aspirations, but they will need to be at their very best and then some in order to halt the Grasshoppers’ run towards September.
