NAVARRE vs NATTE BEALIBA – SWANS CAUSE SHOCK
Natte Bealiba has scored a shock victory over Navarre, triumphing over the Grasshoppers by two goals on Sunday.
Lead by standout performances from star midfielder Stephen Ross, utility Zac Perez and veteran defender Chris Jardine, the Swans upset the second-ranked Grasshoppers, 8.9 (57) to 6.9 (45) in a hard-fought, low-scoring contest which was fought out at a frenetic pace.
Navarre’s woes began early when they lost coach Daniel Parkin courtesy of a suspected elbow injury after he copped a heavy hit in a marking contest, and it was all downhill from there for the Grasshoppers, who also lost star forward Zane Bigmore to a knee injury in the third term.
Ross and Perez ran rampant for Natte through the midfield, continually creating attacking opportunities for their side, while also helping to limit Navarre’s chances going forward, while Jardine, the recalled Jamie Evans and fellow backman Dean Graco kept the wraps on the Navarre forward line throughout the contest.
Swans skipper Mark Fitzgerald, who also took on the coaching duties for the day in the absence of Shane Green, was the major beneficiary of his side’s midfield dominance, slotting two goals for the day and also featuring amongst the Swans’ best.
Navarre’s leading goalkickers for the day were Zane Bigmore and Nick Murphy with two each, while Bryce Tickner, Ash Driscoll and Aiden Lee were named the Hoppers’ standouts.
CAMPBELLS CREEK vs CARISBROOK – REDBACKS CONTINUE TO DOMINATE
Carisbrook has continued its dominance of the MCDFNL, this time scoring a mammoth 178-point victory over Campbells Creek on the Magpies’ home turf.
Yet another haul of goals to full forward Nathan Wright, who added another seven to his tally this round, along with seven to big man Jackson Bowen and five to Nick Wright, helped the Redbacks to their second largest winning margin of the year.
The clash was virtually over by quarter time, with the Redbacks slotting 12 goals to one in a first term blowout, and the carnage continued from thereon in, adding five, six and 11 majors in the second, third and final quarters to surge to a 34.21 (225) to 6.11 (47) victory.
The Creekers simply had no answers to the dominance of the Redbacks, who have now established a two-game lead over their nearest rivals and seem all but destined to feature on MCDFNL grand final day.
Along with the Wrights and Bowen, coach Ben Kick, clearance king Ryan Hudson-Morgan and the high-flying Pat Jenes featured among the best for the visitors, while Cordie McKendry, Brendan Connelly, Gary Bradford and coach Sean Smith were the Magpies’ best.
AVOCA vs MARYBOROUGH ROVERS - DOG OF A DAY FOR ROVERS
Nine goals to star forward Murray Bond has given Avoca its biggest win of the 2013 season, downing the struggling Maryborough Rovers by 99 points on Saturday.
Despite the unflattering scoreline, Rovers found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being in front at quarter time, taking an 11-point lead into the second quarter.
The Magpies’ joy was shortlived however, with the Bulldogs gaining the upper hand in the second term thanks to a seven-goal to one second quarter and went from there, scoring a 19.21 (135) to 5.6 (36) win over the winless Rovers, including a seven-goal final term.
Along with Bond, Jesse Britton made the most of his sojourn forward, kicking three, while hard-nosed midfielder Beau Ketchen booted two. Brent Hudson virtually played a lone hand for Rovers up forward, slotting three of his side’s five goals.
Along with Bond and Britton, Tom Nankievell, Alec Wiltshire and Brad Martland were the Bulldogs’ best, while Matt Stiles, Scott Sellers, Lauchlan Williams and Brent Ritchie were Rovers’ best.
The win was Avoca’s fifth of the season, while Rovers still remain in search of a breakthrough victory.
MALDON vs TRENTHAM – BOMBERS BLOW SAINTS AWAY
Seven goals to Matt Kile has given Maldon its sixth victory of season 2013, scoring a 62-point win over Trentham.
The Dons booted 19.10 (124) to 8.14 (62) to rack up the victory, demolishing the struggling Saints with a seven goal to nil second quarter. The Saints held their own in the opening term, carrying a one-point lead into the second term only to see the Dons run away with the points from thereon in as they again exploited their home ground expertise.
Along with Kile’s bag of seven, Hayden Kelly slotted three for the Dons, while Kel Chaffey-Jones, Jacob Fitzpatrick and Shaun Burchell all booted two each. John Cowell kicked four for the improving Saints, while Grant Fleming, Lewis Bruton, Brian Cole and Daniel Canfield all kicked singles.
Kelly, Burchell, Chaffey Jones and Kile were named the Dons’ best, while Clayton Scoble, Elliott Drew, Cole and Chris Whelan were the Saints’ standouts.
HARCOURT vs DUNOLLY – LIONS HOLD OFF EAGER EAGLES
Harcourt has seen off a second-half scare from Dunolly to record a 29-point win over the rapidly-improving Eagles
Paul Chaplin and Kyle McLean both slotted five goals apiece to help the Lions record a 21.12 (138) to 16.11 (107) victory over the Eagles, who continued to show signs of improvement in the second half of the 2013 season.
Both sides were evenly matched from the get-go, until the Eagles managed to break away and snatch the victory courtesy of Chaplin and McLean’s hauls, although Dunolly also had their own strong targets up forward, with Brad Schodde slotting five and Jeremy Laird booting four majors of his own.
Kris Davis continued his outstanding 2013 season for the Lions to be named best afield for the victors, along with Chaplin, Nathan Mitchell, Alan Mack and McLean.
Midfield dynamo Joe Thompson, Lee Jackson, Matt Gibbs and Brett Thomson were the Eagles’ best in the loss.
LEXTON vs ROYAL PARK – LEXTON TAKES OUT BATTLE OF THE TIGERS
Lexton has easily accounted for Royal Park in the MCDFNl’s battle of the Tigers, scoring a huge 133-point win over Bushy.
Lexton never took its foot off the pedal in the clash at Hedges Oval, starting with a bang and maintaining that momentum throughout to win 24.14 (158) to 3.7 (25).
Small forward Rob Mosby continued his outstanding patch of form for Lexton, booting six goals, while star forward Matt Brown kicked four of his own. Royal Park shared its three goals between Jayden Humphrey, Trent Pye and Brendan Birch.
Mosby, Jordan Phelan, Lachlan Pryor, Paul Phillips, James Templeton and Michael Jennings were Lexton’s best players, while Jibb Iglesias, Brendan Birch, Laurence Parker, Ben McKay, Hamish Blake and Dylan McLean were Royal Park’s best.
NEWSTEAD vs TALBOT – NEWSTEAD BOUNCE BACK
Talbot has felt the full wrath of a wounded Newstead, going down on the wrong end of a 106-point loss on Saturday.
On the rebound from a big loss at the hands of Carisbrook last round, the Steaders put the Hawks to the sword, scoring a 22.10 (142) to 5.6 (36) victory over a hapless Talbot, who had no answers for the Roos’ Daniel Christmas, who booted eight goals.
The Roos’ intentions were clear from the start, booting six goals in the opening term, while holding Talbot scoreless, and continuing from there, limiting Talbot’s scoring opportunities while creating plenty of their own, with the Hawks only managing three goals in the first three quarters.
Along with Christmas, Michael Checkley and Nathan Webster were prominent on the scoreboard for the Steaders, booting four and three goals respectively. Jon Arnel, Darren Burns, Trent and Matt Barras and Josh Sullivan all slotted singles for the Hawks.
Jacob and Michael Dalrymple were the Steaders’ best, along with Matt Culvenor, Christmas and Checkley, while Rowan Prentice, Lachlan Fishwick, Matt Whiteman, Brandon McRedmond and Trent Barras were Talbot’s best.
