Maryborough Rovers v Campbells Creek
In a round of upsets, the Maryborough Rovers handed Campbells Creek a lesson in wet weather football at Jubilee Oval on Saturday and lifted the spirits of their players and all Rovers supporters in the process with their first win of the season.
It was a match winning performance in the opening term when the Rovers made better use of the ball before the conditions became too wet as they led Creek to the ball at every opportunity and created some scoreboard pressure with a five goal term to one.
Creek had to play catch up football from this time on and while managing to outscore Rovers for the remainder of the game, they could not do enough to get the points as Rovers won the game by 13 points.
Rovers ground level players were very good with Graeme Kennedy, Andrew Jardine and Brent Ritchie in everything while Corey Taylor and Matt Stiles both finished with two goals apiece and it is interesting to note that Dion Hedger returned to the side and also slotted two goals.
Chris Stone kicked three goals for Creek as did Joel Smith who showed that he is over his recent injury problems with another best on field performance for the Creekers.
Harcourt v Newstead
Newstead travelled to Harcourt on Saturday in what was expected to be a close encounter, however it was not to be as Harcourt made good use of the dry ball in the first term kicking eight goals seven behinds to four straight goals to set up an impressive 51 point victory.
Newstead went into the game missing skipper Mark Ramsey (groin) and David Wall , whilst Harcourt was without big man Mark Oxley.
Scott Newton was outstanding for the Lions in the opening term kicking the first two goals and bringing his team mates into play with a number of his possessions. The Lions were running in numbers and kicking to space and made full advantage as they continued to pepper the goals, while Newstead were failing to handle the conditions, save for key forward Daniel Christmas booting three goals as the Lions took a 31 point lead into the first change.
The rain set in from midway through the opening term and showed no signs of receding, with the wet and slippery conditions doing no favours for the Steaders who were behind the eight ball after a poor start to the game.
It was a good old fashioned hard slog for the remainder of the game and goals were hard to find but the Lions outplayed their opponents in all facets and Kasey Williams led the way with three goals, while veteran defender Alan Mack produced a highlight when he drifted forward in the final term to kick his second goal of the game and celebrated by high fiving his team mates and unbelievably some of his opponents all the way back to his defensive position.
The win has seen Harcourt move into the top four as they now await the result of the Lexton v Natte game in the second week of the split round next Saturday.
Trentham v Royal Park
It was a very happy Trentham that won a low scoring thriller at home against Royal Park on Saturday.
Royal Park was confident after holding the Saints scoreless in the opening term, but the terrible conditions made for a tough hard slog for the duration of the game.
Trentham fought back strongly in the second term to level the sores at half time, but it was the Tigers who scored two points in the third term to Trentham’s solitary point to allow the Tigers to take a one point lead into the final term.
It was Trentham who finished the game stronger to post a gutsy seven point win in shocking conditions.
It was the James boys that led the way for Trentham, James Cann, James Gray and James Wicker were all amongst the better players as they fought hard for every possession, while Daniel Canfield, Sam Gardiner and Luke Whitehouse were the goalkickers for the home team. Snowy Walker, Brendan Birch and Ben McKay tried hard for the Tigers while Jibb Iglesias and Laurence Parker were the only goal scorers.
The win has seen Trentham keep the wooden spoon at bay although Royal Park failed to take advantage of the opportunity to go ahead of Dunolly and remain in 12th position.
