Talbot has sent a message to their competitors in the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL after a resounding 128 point victory over Maldon in the 2014 MCDFNL Season Opener at Talbot Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
Talbot coach Ricky Andrews was inspirational down back and along with assistant coach Matthew Smith set up many attacking moves from across the half back line.
The Hawks stormed out of the blocks with a seven goal first quarter led by Josh Sullivan who kicked eight goals for the game with four of his goals scored in the opening term. Alongside Sullivan was Josh Parsons who also kicked eight goals for the game and he also slotted a couple of early goals in the opening term. Parsons showed the skill that attracted a NSW Scholarship with the Collingwood Football Club in 2008 and has been a great pick up for the Hawks.
Another good acquisition for the Hawks is Tylan Humm who adds plenty of pace around the wing and he was very much under notice throughout the game as was Luke Kemp who is also a very lively running type player, while Trent Barras also figured among the better players for Talbot with a five goal haul.
Maldon’s Josh Pascoe and Ben Doyle had a good battle in the ruck with Tom Sutherland and Nathan Smith at the centre bounces, with the Bombers actually winning the majority of centre breaks, with Hayden Kelly gathering numerous possessions around the ground for Maldon as did Kyle Winstanley, but the Bombers could not penetrate the Hawks defense with a number of rebounding efforts setting up the Hawks forwards.
Talbot dominated the game on the scoreboard from start to finish, particularly in the second and third quarters in which they added 20 goals, but the heat eventually took its toll in the final term, with both sides showing fatigue and play became scrappy. Regardless, the Hawks showed enough to be confident of figuring in the top eight at the end of the season, whilst Maldon will be looking to regroup after a slow start to the season, showing only patches of their best throughout the day and lacking a key target up forward.
The final scores were Talbot 31.18.204 to Maldon 11.10.76
In the A Grade netball, though, the Dons took the spoils and the perfect way to start their season, leading at every change against an improved Talbot before powering away in the last quarter to post a 52-24 win.
Bec McKnight, runner-up in the Maryborough Advertiser’s Netballer of the Year award last season, shot 33 goals in the arc for Maldon, with partner in crime Avalon Cromb netting 12 goals of her own. Alexandra Earl was in good form for Talbot early, shooting 17 of the Hawks’ 24 goals.
