The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League will begin its quest for a place inside the AFL Victoria’s top 20 this weekend as it faces off against the Geelong District Football Netball League on Saturday.
Currently ranked twenty-second in the AFL Victoria rankings, the MCDFNL Lions will attempt to use last year’s massive win over the Picola District Football League as a springboard into this weekend’s clash against the GDFL in pursuit of what will hopefully be another victory.
Lead by Lexton coach Shane Fisher, who has stepped up to the top job after serving as assistant under Wayne Driscoll in 2012, the MCDFNL has assembled a team that Fisher feels plays to the league’s strengths.
Speaking at the MCDFNL’s press conference earlier this week, the man charged with leading the Lions to another interleague victory says he feels the side has the perfect blend of youth and experience in order to combat the GDFL, and says that leg speed will be the side’s number one weapon come Saturday.
“I think our leg speed is definitely our biggest strength,” Fisher said. “We’ve got a game plan that we want to play to, and I think most of the players have got on board with that.
“There’s a good feeling in the group at training, and the guys have got to know each other really well.”
Fisher said he had done some research on their GDFL opponents ahead of Saturday’s clash at Princes Park, but was backing his charges to get the job done.
“We know the basics about them,” Fisher said. “We know they’re going to be quite a big team, they have two or three quality ruckman, so we’ve got to try and cover that.”
On paper, the MCDFNL team looks like a volatile combination, with a dependable backline, lead by Newstead’s Pat Cummins and with run provided by Matthew Smith and Damon Aspland, plenty of midfield options and a potent forward line boasting some tall timber in the form of Jackson Bowen, mid sized forwards such as Matt Brown, Murray Bond and Ash Driscoll and crumbing options in Cole Roscholler and Joel Cross.
Despite a few injuries and the unavailability of some players, Fisher says the commitment to the interleague cause has been solid from across the league.
“We’ve got a group of guys that are really keen to play together, and represent the MCDFNL.”
