MCDFNL Match Reviews – Round 7
Avoca v Carisbrook
An injury depleted Carisbrook were too strong for Avoca on Saturday as they ran out comfortable winners with a very consistent performance, kicking four goals in each quarter to win by sixty one points.
Coach Luke Treacy led the way for the Redbacks with a best on ground performance, while two players that have come up through the junior development system in Clayton Furniss and Mitchell Whelan also proving their worth at senior level, with Whelan kicking four goals.
Carisbrook welcomed back ruckman Jackson Bowen from injury who, despite being involved in a heavy clash early in the game, was very good in his return game, while Liam Cunningham was unstoppable up forward finishing with a five goal haul.
Avoca was no match for the Redbacks and it was only in the final term that they were able to match their opponents, as they finished with a four goal term to add a little bit of respectability to the scoreline.
Alec Wiltshire and Hugh Bond were under notice down back for Avoca as they racked up a number of possessions, while Murray Bond provided a focal point up forward finishing with two goals. Taylor Raine and Tom Nankivell were also amongst the better players for the Bulldogs.

Maryborough Rovers v Campbells Creek
It was an exciting game at Jubilee Oval in the battle of the Magpies with Maryborough Rovers posting their second win of the season after a come from behind victory to win by seven points.
Campbells Creek led by nine points at three quarter time and when Brandon Greenwood goaled in the first minute of the final term, the Creekers had the momentum and were on their way to victory.
It was at this point in the game that Rovers player Andrew Nelson left the field on a stretcher with a knee injury and this allowed Rovers to regroup, and with Campbells Creek coach Sean Smith then sent from the field with a yellow card. Smith had been in outstanding for Creek and when he left the field, the momentum swung back in favour of Rovers.
Karson Guareschi goaled for Rovers and then David Popovski slipped into overdrive and kicked three goals in six minutes to put Rovers in front by thirteen points midway through the final term. Smith returned for Campbells Creek late in the game and goaled to reduce the margin to seven points, but it was too late and the siren sounded shortly after.
Rovers coach Scott Sellers was most prominent for the home team as was Ryan Guareschi who bullocked his way through the packs with strength, while David Popovski’s final term was a match winning performance.
Sean Smith led the way for Creek and was well supported by Brandon Greenwood and Daniel Klimeck, while Adam Pollock finished with three goals.
Rovers won 13.14.92 to 13.7.85
Dunolly v Navarre
Navarre travelled to Dunolly minus a number of players due to injury, including Brent Flood, Louis Hannett and Billy Parry, but their absence was barely felt as the Grasshoppers as they crushed the Eagles by 150 points.
Dunolly were competitive in the first term and found an avenue to goal through Brad Schodde and Tim Britton, but it was fairly well plain sailing for Navarre for the remainder of the game, as they racked up fifty scoring shots to ten for the game,
Ash Driscoll bagged another eight goals to remain at the top of the league goalkicking board, while the high flying Kris Brennan also finished with five goals.
Nick Murphy, Josh Driscoll and Lachlan Slorach were considered the better players for Navarre, while Jayden Fowkes continued with his consistent form down back.
Jay Pitto, Tim Britton and Tim Conway tried hard all day for the Eagles but they were no match for the dominance of the Grasshoppers at every level.
Navarre won 28.22.190 to 6.4.40
Trentham v Newstead
Newstead has scraped home by just 13 points against a spirited Trentham side in round seven of the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League.
In yet another close shave for the Steaders, they overcame the gallant Saints to record a 12.14 (86) to 10.13 (73) on Trentham's home turf.
The Saints took advantage of yet another slow start from the Roos to take 10 point lead into quarter time before the Steaders bounced back to take a four-point buffer into the main break, 7.8 (50) to 6.10 (46), leaving Trentham to rue their inaccurate kicking.
The Saints kept coming in the third term, with the Steaders clinging to a seven-point lead at three quarter time, setting things up for an intriguing final term. The Roos' class proved the difference between the two teams in the end, with Newstead able to stretch their lead out to two goals as the Saints ran out of steam.
Daniel Christmas stood up in the absence of Mark Ramsey, slotting two majors, while Nathan Webster and David Wall chipped in from the midfield with two goals apiece. Youngster Tom Ruggles, Webster, big man Liam Bright, Michael Dalrymple and backman Pat Cummins were the Steaders' best in a big team effort.
Mark Strickland continued his good form as a target up forward for the Saints, booting three, while Luke Whitehouse and Justin Hoffman provided good support with two goals apiece. Whitehouse, Strickland and Reece Hourigan were named the Saints' best in another spirited display.
Royal Park v Lexton
Lexton has handed Royal Park its second defeat of the 2014 season, doling out an 89-point drubbing at Hedges Oval.
In an evenly spread team effort, Lexton put on impressive display to down their Tiger counterparts 17.19 (121) to 4.8 (32).
Lexton's intentions were clear from the opening bounce, slotting 6.3 in the opening term, all the while holding Bushy to just two first-half goals. Things got worse for Royal Park in the second half, piling on nine majors and allowing just another two majors to their opponents.
What made Lexton's win all the more impressive was the spread of goalkickers, with usual spearhead Matt Brown (three goals) taking a back seat to Justin White and Justin Hobson, who booted four majors apiece, while Dean Murray and James Cusack each booted two. Rebounding defenders Nick Spolding and Damon Aspland were named Lexton's best along with Jimmy Templeton, Nathan Barnes and Jordan Phelan.
In a disappointing day for Royal Park, Zac Stewart played a lone hand up forward for much of the day, booting two of his side's four goals, while Dylan McLean, Brendan Birch, Trent Pye and Jay Anderson were named Bushy's best.
Natte Bealiba v Talbot
Natte Bealiba has put an impressive display to down an underwhelming Talbot by 74 points on the Swans' home turf on Sunday.
The Swans recovered from a slow start, which saw them go into the first break 10 points in arrears, to boot six goals in the second term, while Talbot could manage just a solitary behind in the second stanza, going into the main break down by 33. the Swans continued to pile on the pain in the second half, slotting 13 goals to the Hawks' five to run out big winners in an impressive display.
Mercurial small forward Ryan Weir lead the way in front of goal for the Swans, making the most of his side's dominance to boot seven goals, ably supported by Matt Stagg (four), Zac Perez (four), Lachlan Douglas (two), Jason Hunt (two) and Lachlan Cameron (two). Captain Jacob Long was best afield for Natte, young gun Trent Mortlock continued his impressive rise, and Weir, Stagg and Douglas rounded out Natte's best.
Big man Jonathon Arnel was Talbot’s most prolific goalkicker on the day, booting three goals with Trent Barras continuing his eye-catching 2014 form with another two goals in a near best-afield display. Anthony Tatchell, Tom Sutherland and Luke Kemp also earned plaudits from coach Ricky Andrews as the Hawks now face a must-win contest against Avoca this Saturday.
Harcourt v Maldon
Harcourt have continued their recent run of good form at home against Maldon on Sunday, downing the Dons by 69 points in an impressive display.
It was a close contest in the opening term as the home team kicked the first four goals of the game through four diferent goalscorers, then Maldon started to control the centre bounces through some good work from Joel Cross and they responded with the next three goals to be only three points in arrears at quarter time.
Unfortunately for the Bombers, Cross sustained a possible knee injury just before quarter time, which hampered the Bombers chances and they failed to score another goal for the remainder of the game, while Harcourt completely dominated play to run out comfortable winners.
Paul Chaplin was difficult to curtail and was the Lions best player and Brayden Wooton, Alex Purdon and Chris Ling also figured amonst the better players, while Dean Watson was the leading goalkicker with four goals, Daniel Smith and Chris Stone both contributed three goals to the scoreline.
Damien Gatti was judged to be Maldon's best player and he was well supported by Nick Kelly and Kyle Winstanley but they were no match for the Lions who went on to win the game quite comfortably, although the Bombers were hampered by inaccuracy around the goal mouth.
Harcourt 15.10.100 def Maldon 3.13.31
