Earlier this week (Tuesday 2nd September), the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football & Netball League held its annual Junior Presentation Night and Vote Count at the Maryborough Harness Racing Club.
With over 380 people in attendance, all provided with a fantastic dinner cooked with thanks to the Carisbrook Lions Club, the night proved to be a fantastic success.
Best and Fairest winners and runners-up were awarded across all grades of junior football and netball, with the winners announced below. All of the votes for each grade of football and netball will be available for viewing on the MCDFNL website following the senior Presentation Night, the Berry Powell Medal, next Monday 8th September
Under 12 Football
Best & Fairest winner – Taylor Kennedy (Avoca FNC), 38 votes
Taylor had an outstanding season for the Bulldogs, being named in their best players in every game for the season and booting 30 goals. The umpires agreed, with Taylor polling votes in 13 games this year, including an incredible 12 Best on Grounds, and earning best on ground honours in every game between Rounds 8 and 15.
Runner-up – Jack Ginnivan (Newstead FNC), 29 votes
Jack has been a huge part of Newstead’s undefeated season, becoming only the second ever Newstead player to boot 100 goals in a season. Jack came home with a bang in this season’s vote count, polling in every game from Round 10 to Round 16, missing the three votes only once in this span.
Under 15 Football
Best & Fairest winner – Daniel Howell (Avoca FNC) – 35 votes
Daniel has had a fantastic season for Avoca, being named amongst the Bulldogs best players in every game they’ve played this year, as well as kicking 33 goals for the season, highlighted by two big bags in the last three round with eight goals against Natte Bealiba in Round 14 and nine goals against Newstead in Round 16, as well as being a part of the MCDFNL’s successful Under 16 Interleague team.
Runner-up – Jake Keogh (Trentham FNC) – 31 votes
Players like Jake are the reason that Trentham’s future looks so bright. Jake’s had a great 2014, booting 35 goals including a seven goal haul against Royal Park, and was, like Daniel, one of the stars of our Under 16 interleague side. Jake helped lead Trentham into a Preliminary Final with a strong performance against Avoca last weekend, where they await the winner of Saturday’s game between Campbells Creek and Maldon.
Under 17.5 Football
Best & Fairest – Callan Wellings (Trentham FNC) – 27 votes
Callan’s fantastic season was rewarded with the 2014 Under 17.5 Football Best & Fairest award. A midfielder with silky skills, Callan was named in Trentham’s top three players in 12 of his 13 home-and-away appearances for the Saints this season, booting 26 goals. Callan also played five senior games for Trentham, and was named in the Saints’ best players in each of his five appearances. The 2014 Under 17.5 Best & Fairest award caps off a stunning individual season in which Callan not only was awarded the Best on Ground medal in the MCDFNL’s Under 16 win over the Central Highlands FL, but also the Best on Ground medal for the AFL Goldfields Under 17 side in their game against AFL Townsville in Far North Queensland earlier this year. For those that haven’t seen Callan play yet, do yourselves a favour and get along to Trentham’s Semi Final against Avoca at Princes Park on Saturday…he’s destined for higher honours!
Runner-up – Oscar Lynzaat (Newstead FNC) – 21 votes
After taking home the Under 15 Best & Fairest last year, Oscar came very close to making it two B&F’s in two years. Oscar booted 38 goals playing primarily as an on-baller this year, and was named in Newstead’s best players in all bar two home-and-away games. After playing in both the MCDFNL’s Under 16 and Under 18 Interleague teams this year, Oscar also received a taste of open-age footy, playing in seven Reserves’ games for the Steaders this year. You can also see Oscar in action this weekend, as Newstead take on Talbot in a Semi Final at Princes Park on Sunday.

Under 12 – Jack Ginnivan (Newstead FNC) – 113 goals
Under 15 - Tim Rinaldi (Carisbrook FNC) – 104 goals
Under 17.5 – Riley Bibby (Navarre FNC) – 43 goals
13 & Under Netball
Best & Fairest – Melita Squire (Navarre FNC), 31 votes
Melita has been a squad member of the 13/U MCDFNL Squad for the past two years. This year she has played predominantly in the centre court for her home club, Navarre, however has been seen to go into goals at times and also head down the defence end of the court when needed, showing her versatility.
Melita is a strong attacking player who reads the play well and will be in action this coming Saturday when she joins her team mates to take on Royal Park.
Runner-up – Kasey Evans (Trentham FNC), 30 votes
Young outgoing versatile player who has played in both the defence and attacking ends throughout the season, swapping between the two ends frequently, she is able to play in any position. Kasey has played a number of games this year in the 15 & Under & 17 & under competitions and will be one of the future leaders of the club.
15 & Under Netball
Best & Fairest – Maggie Clough (Navarre FNC), 25 votes
Maggie has had a great season with Navarre and played in the MCDFNL 15/U Squad at the Maryborough Tournament, she has also been a member of the 13/U MCDFNL Squad for the previous two seasons.
Maggie is another versatile player, being able to play in any position on the court, this year she has played mainly in goals for Navarre but has also been known to play mid-court and in defence if needed. You can see Maggie in action this coming Saturday as her team takes on Royal Park.
Runner-up – Ella Tranter (Maryborough Rovers FNC), 24 votes
Ella received the 13/U B&F award last year and again has had another great season. This year she has been a member of the 15/U MCDFNL Squad and has also had senior experience playing up in the senior grades as well as playing in both 15/U and 17/U at times for her club, Rovers.
Ella is a lovely mid court player who displays both strong attacking and defensive skills, and has maturity with her passes and ability to create turn-overs for her team. This weekend Ella’s 15/U team has the weekend off after a strong win last weekend, but keep an eye out you may see her in action in one of the senior Rovers team that are playing this weekend.
17 & Under Netball
Best & Fairest – Ellie Short (Royal Park FNC) – 29 votes
Ellie has come back to the MCDFNL this year after spending last year playing netball with Maryborough in the Bendigo FNL, she was a member of the MCDFNL 17/U interleague squad.
She is a strong ring defender who plays an attacking style game, always putting in 100% and known for taking lovely intercepts. She reads the play well and has a bright future ahead of her with her netball.
Runners-up – Caitlin Drummond (Avoca FNC) & Teresa Fitzpatrick (Maldon FNC) – 26 votes
Caitlin Drummond: Caitlin has had a fine year with her netball being a member of the 17/U MCDFNL Interleague Squad, playing in her 17/U team and also stepping up to play in A grade also. Caitlin is a tall player who can play either end of the court, she has been playing in defence for her 17/U team then steps into a goaling position in A grade showing her versatility.
Caitlin will be playing for both teams this coming weekend, when her 17/U team take on Carisbrook on Saturday and then she’ll play A Grade on Sunday against Newstead.
Teresa Fitzpatrick: Teresa has had another great season with her Maldon teammates and is also an extremely versatile player, playing mainly in goals this year, she moves well and is a very accurate goaler. However at times she’s moved to the defence end where she applies great pressure to her opponent and reads the play well to pick off many intercepts.
