The Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of esteemed administrator and MCDFNL Life Member Max Martin, who passed away earlier this week aged 82 years.
Max can, without any hyperbole, be described as a legend of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League, with one of his main legacies having served as League Secretary for an amazing 40 years from 1968 to 2007. Max also played football for Avoca throughout his tenure with the league.
Max, who spent his full-time hours as a primary school teacher of renown, is so highly regarded for his administration of the MCDFNL during his time as secretary that following his tenure, the MCDFNL began awarding the Max Martin Medal to one outstanding club administrator each year at the league’s annual Berry Powell Medal night.
Acknowledgement of Max’s achievements wasn’t confined to just the MCDFNL either, with the Victorian Country Football League (now AFL Victoria Country) bestowing upon Max their prestigious Recognition of Service Medal in 2002.
Max also served as secretary of the Maryborough Highland Gathering for an equally impressive 41 years from 1970-2011, overseeing the annual meeting at Princes Park each year and, like during his tenure with the MCDFNL, overcoming many obstacles throughout this time.
For those wishing to pay their respects to Max, his funeral will be held on Wednesday October 1st at Christ The King Anglican Church, Nightingale Street, Maryborough, commencing at 1:30pm.
The MCDFNL sends its deepest sympathies to Max’s wife Patricia and his family at this difficult time, and we will always remember our friend Max with great fondness. Rest well Max, until we meet again.
